John Davis was a member of the South Australian Burke Relief Expedition under John McKinlay. His journal was published in an edited form by William Westgarth in 1863 as: "Tracks of McKinlay and party across Australia by John Davis, one of the expedition". Edited from Mr Davis' manuscript journal, with an introductory view of the recent Australia explorations of McDouall Stuart, Burke and Wills, Landsborough etc.

McKinlay left Adelaide on the 16th August 1861. Includes a list of leading events and their dates in the discovery, exploration and settlement of Australia. This work records one of several successful expeditions that have lately resolved the long standing 'problem of Central Australia'.
