Local notes

Alexander Chegwidden, husband of Elizabeth Chegwidden. Father of Alexander Chigwidden; Charles Hughes Chigwidden; Susan Hughes Chigwidden; Joshua Chigwidden; Josiah Chigwidden and 8 others.

From Maurine Work's account:

"Many of the early settlers bought land as speculation* and were reluctant to work it themselves so jobs were easy to find and Alexander and his sons would have had no difficulty in finding work. But early in 1840, just weeks after they had landed, a series of family tragedies struck.

On 24th February, Susan (the eldest daughter) fell sick with typhus fever and died. 1 year-old Frederick died on 21st March; Elizabeth, the remaining daughter on 3rd April and Henry on 8th April. On 23rd April, the father, Alexander, died and Elizabeth his wife, three hours later. Daniel died the following day and three weeks later, on 14th May, John died.

Only five remained of the family of thirteen who had set out to begin a new life - Alexander junior, Charles, Josiah, Peter and 4 year-old William."
