This diary has been compiled from four versions. Oliver Ragless, the youngest of the party, kept a day-to-day account, which was written in lead pencil during the journey from Pine Forest (now Enfield), South Australia to Mount Alexander gold fields (near present-day Castlemaine), Victoria, and back to Hawkes Nest, about 24 miles south-east of Wellington, South Australia.
