John 'Jacky' White was an early South Australian pioneer who brought building and architectural skills with him when he arrived at the new colony on the Tam O'Shanter in 1836. He settled on the rich soils of the Adelaide flood plains and quickly established a prosperous and productive mixed farm in this area which was called 'Reedbeds'. He later became a prominent pastoralist in South Australia, owning several large properties where he ran sheep and cattle. The White family left a much-valued legacy to South Australia in the form of 'The White Collection' which is a collection of ornithological treasures retained by museums throughout Australia.
