Local notes

"A most suitable place for the Police" was the way Inspector Gordon of the S.A. Police described the area around the Cave near Mount Gambier in 1845. Acting under orders from his Excellency, Governor Sir George Grey, he established a permanent force there to give protection to those who lived in the newly settled district of the South East of S.A. In 1857 Eugene Von Guerard was also impressed with the Cave and his drawing, albeit with some artistic licence, is shown on the cover of this book. A Most Suitable Place tells the story of the discovery, exploration and the first developments in 1847 that influenced the site of the present City of Mount Gambier 150 years ago.
