This is a really good book.

The reader is immediately plunged into the action and the book's completely plot-oriented. It's fast paced with almost all of the book happening on the morning of September 11 between the first plane hitting and the first tower collapsing. Author Lauren Tarshis manages to squeeze an impressive
Show More
number of facts into the book without being completely didactic. An author's note is included, explaining why she chose to write about September 11 in her series*. A timeline of events and a question-and-answer section provide additional information about the 9/11 attacks.

This would be a great high-interest title to hand to kids who are in upper elementary or even middle school and reading at a lower reading level. Because the books are based on true events and contain information about these events, they may appeal to kids who like learning about history. The story is definitely high-drama.

Readalikes: AMERICA IS UNDER ATTACK by Don Brown

Maybe other books dealing with tragic disasters like The Titanic, etc.

*Um, personally I found Tarshis's story of being ON A PLANE TO NEW YORK when the attacks happened maybe more compelling than the actual book, but that's very much an adult perspective - Tarshis's point of view is not one I've heard before.

It was kind of interesting to take a quick look back on to what it might of been like. Very quick read, but it's is not a slow book. The action starts right at the beginning.

I Survived: The Attacks of September 11, 2001 By: Lauren Tarshis

Summary:
This book was based on the events that unfolded in New York City on September 11, 2001. Although the story line is fictional the author does a great job of incorporating actual facts that occurred that day. The story is
Show More
centered around a teen boy named Lucas who is a football players and has a father that is a New York City firefighter. Other key characters in the story are Uncle Benny who is Lucas’s fathers best friend and coworker. The day that the attacks happen Lucas decides to go into the city alone in order to talk to Uncle Benny about his football career and the fact that his parents want him to quit because of recent injuries. As Lucas gets to the fire station to talk with Uncle Benny, the attack on the World Trade Center occurred. That is when Lucas is in the middle of all the chaos and panic that struck New York City that day. The story then details the different events of the day as Lucas attempts to reunite with his father who is at ground zero. The end of the story is a happy one when Lucas’ father and Uncle Benny survive, although many men from their fire station did not.

Personal Reaction:
I personally thought this was a great way for a student to be able to learn about the events that occurred on that day. Although it was a fictional story line the events stayed true to history and allowed the reader to become involved through Lucas’ character. I also liked that the author did not get too graphic with descriptions on the events that took place because of the targeted age group of readers. I enjoyed this book and think that it would be a great resource for students wanting to learn about events of that day.

Classroom Extension

1. I would use this book as a lesson in the classroom on the days leading up to the actual date of September 11th. I would allow students to see what the perspective would be from a kid.
2. I think another great activity would be to allow students to form their own story about what they would think they would do if put in a situation like the character in the book. I would allow this to be a creative writing assignment and use it as an evaluation on problem solving and critical thinking skills.

I've been enjoying the "I Survived" series with my 7 year old.... this one REALLY got to me. There were a number of times I got choked up, largely because I can still remember that day so well.

Lucas enjoys to play football but his family thinks that it's too dangerous for him. So Lucas decides to go see his favorite person Benny who was a firefighter. When he reached the station he never would have expected what was going to happen next. All of a sudden a plan crashed into the North

This is the perfect book for dealing with kids wanting to learn about 9/11. It covers the key points while also touching on the fact that these people led everyday lives up to the second the first plane crashed into the Twin Towers. The story is short but to the point and not too graphic for the

younger audience.

Personal Response: My first reaction to this "realistic" fiction story was that is wasn't so realistic. I think the author represents history well, but the fiction felt like fiction to me. Still, it's a good book within a great series.

Curricular Connections: This selection could bring literature
Show More
into an American history unit about the attacks of September 11. Because the main character is young, the students can imagine themselves in his situation during the event.

This is a very quick and easy read that should appeal to reluctant readers (it took me about a half an hour to read). I think this is the first year at our middle school where all of our students were born after September 11, 2001. This event is history to them, and it is history that I feel is
Show More
important for them to learn and know. It shaped the world they live in.
The author's personal 9/11 experience at the end was just a interesting and educational as the story itself. I hope students will read this one.

I cried. This is the first time Tarshis made me cry. Maybe because I remember it all too well or maybe it was just better than her other books, but this book is tarnished only by the obnoxious last minute save of a character you were led to believe was dead. I'm starting to realize that there are
Show More
never any "real" stakes in Tarshis's books. Yeah, hundreds and thousands of people die in the events she writes about, but the main character(s) always come out unscathed.

My first "I Survived" book. The series is extremely popular with the middle grades set. Short chapter book of historical fiction, this one was difficult, but handled in a sensitive manner. The book not only gives us an up-close slice of what happened on 9-11 as it affected one particular child,
Show More
Lucas, whose father and uncle are NYC firefighters, it also gives some insight on a totally separate topic: football concussions.
