Roger the Jolly Pirate is a cute story that could be beneficial for writer's workshop activities. This story has a distinct introduction to the story that could be used as an example for forming introductions. Also, it's a cute spin on other stories children might have heard about.

this story is perfect for kids in grades k-4th. It is basic, however, the older grades can dissect the story more in depth than the younger ones are able to. This book has a deep story line and portrays many different writing styles. "Before anyone had heard of Black beard, Long Jogn Silver, or

Calico Black, there was a pirate named Roger". I absoloutley love this introduction into the story. This book is full of descriptive pirate 'lingo' for children to learn and a ton of adjectives for kids to learn alternative ways to describe simple things.

Humor. It's OK to be different like Roger the JOLLY pirate.

This is a good read aloud book on prediction. I think students will like it because it is a little difficult to predict what Jolly will do because he is such an odd pirate.

Such a great book, with awesome illustrations!

This book has extremely vivid illustrations so it would be good in the classroom to teach about predictions. It can also be used to teach writing as it has good examples of leads and transitions.

Great book to teach about being unique and making predictions when starting a story. Kids would love the illustrations and story behind it.

This is a great book! I think students would love this book because of the illustrations in the book as well how the author kind of keeps you guessing what will happen until the end. This book is good for strong vocabulary, descriptive words, and drawing conclusions.

Roger the Pirate is no ordinary pirate, he just messes everything up. The rest of the pirates on the ship throw him under board so that he stays out of trouble. Little did they know, Roger would be of more help then they thought.

This is kind of a wild book for Brett Helquist and I really liked it. I'm not sure if this has any factual connection to anything, but it's still a funny story of a hapless pirate and it does mention the dreaded Jolly Roger flag that and includes a song based on an old sea shanty at the end. The

illustrations are very distinctive and pleasant. It's an all together fun story.

This is a really cute little book about a pirate named Roger who does not fit in with the other pirates because of his kind and caring nature. I really liked the artwork; the darker colors paired with the exaggerated, imaginative drawings really brought the story to life and gave it a whimsical

feeling. I liked the message of the book; that even though you aren’t just like the others or feel like you don’t fit in, there is something special and unique about you that can be used to help. Of course, Roger is helping pirates steal and murder, but pirates have always been a favorite with young children.

This is another great book for expression and punctuation. With the help of the different illustrations, the different punctuations that the author uses and the different expression that is used helps for overall comprehension.

This book is a great book for introducing leads into writing. This tells the story of how the Jolly Roger got it's name and the fantasy tale of how it all began.

This book is good to use for a model of a lead. Students can see how the author lured the readers into the story and try using that type of writing in their story. This book is about the skull and cross bone flag ans how it became famous.

This is a story boys will enjoy. The students will enjoy the very detailed illustrations in this story.

Great story about being yourself. Also great mentor text for writing leads

This story of a pirate who isn't much of a pirate is excellent for teaching how the author's leads the readers into a story. It can used during writer's workshop as a mentor text for leads or openings to a story. It starts off by telling the readers, you might have heard of all these other famous

pirates but you've never heard the tale of Roger the Pirate. I can also be great for teaching punctuation and expression. It also educates students on pirate legends.
