The well-known story of The Ugly Duckling is told by Hans Christian Andersen. It's beautiful and detailed illustrations by Jerry Pinkney won this book a Caldecott Honor. The moral of this story is that even if you are different or unaccepted by your peers, you can still be successful. This lesson
Show More
can be used in the classroom to teach students about both sides of bullying. I loved this book and the pictures and will definitely use it to teach my students and my own children what this book is all about.

Great adaptation of a classic but alas too long for storytime.

Jerry Pinkney's retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Ugly Duckling includes realistic looking illustrations and a heart-touching message. Every picture is rich with color and emotion. This classic tale is brought back to life by Pinkney who creates breathtaking illustrations to enhance the
Show More
meaning and beauty of the original story. Along with the glorious illustrations, which tell the story by themselves, Pinkney adds a few tweeks to the storyline to make it his own. The illustrations, combined with the famous story about seeking to find acceptance are sure to move readers. Readers young and old will enjoy Pinkney's The Ugly Duckling.

This book was ok but kind of depressing because the poor duckling does not find his friends or anybody that likes him until the end when he fianlly grows into a beautiful swan. I would not read this book to my class.

A classic fairy tale about the growth and development of a swan, and the adventures he goes through on his way to self-knowledge. Adapted and illustrated by Jerry Pinkney.

This book tells children not to judge by the appearance of others around them.

This story is about the ugly duckling. When a duckling hatches it soon finds out that being different is hard. He goes through a lot of trials and finds it hard to be loved by anyone. But after a year, he finds out that he is a swan and the most beautiful swan on the lake.

This was a beautifully
Show More
illustrated book. This story has always had a good meaning behind it. I remember this story anytime I hear someone call somebody else ugly or different.

I would use this story to teach kids not to judge someone because they are different and teach them to be nice.

A mother duck gave birth to five baby ducklings but one of them just did not look right. He was alot bigger that the others and he was ugly. He always got made fun of for looking the way he did. Well he lost his family and moved on by himself because he did not fit in. At the end he sees the pond
Show More
full of beautiful swans and he notices that he is a swan himself. He was the most beautiful swan in the pond.

Beautiful illustrations and a great adaptation of the original. i enjoyed this more than the original. I liked the encounters with other animals and his jouney to find himself. I think we all think of this story when we look at pictures from our awkward years. This story was always an inspiration to
Show More
me, knowing that one day we all blossom into someone beautiful and confident. This is a great story for children to read over and over again.

This book is just a classic. Good moral as well as a cute story. I have loved this book throughout my life and would love to someday share it with kids. 5 stars definitely!

This is a great feel good story for any child who feels that they are "different." This story line is about a duck who is made fun of his whole life because he was awkward and different compared to his brothers and sisters. However, little do his siblings know that he grows in to something great
Show More
that no one else can be. He turns into a swan and is the new favorite by the children who come and visit the local pond. The Ugly Duckling is a wonderful book that captures how being patient and having confidence in oneself can have a positive effect in the long run.

A duckling hatches with a batch of ducks. He looks very different from the other ducklings and they don't like him. The adult ducks run him away. Then he goes to live with an old lady in a cottage but when he doesn't lay eggs she shoos him away. He swims around in the pond and becomes stuck when
Show More
the ice freezes but he is saved by a man. Then he finds a group of swans and realizes he is a beautiful swan. This is a great story about growing up and becoming beautiful. It also encourages to be accepting of yourself and others.

A swan is hatched into a family of ducks. Growing up the swan is teased and made fun of for not looking like the other ducks and being different. The swan goes goes off because he feels thaokt he does not belong anywhere. One day after meeting a group of swans he realizes that he is not ugly and
Show More
that he is actually the most beautiful swan ever.

I never really liked this book. It always made me sad how mean everyine was to the duckiling. This book is a good lesson to kids that we shouldn't make fun of others and that all of us are special in our own way.

classroom ideas:
1)having a class discussion on the imporatnce of not making fun of others.
2)Have the kids write a story on a time they were made fun of and how that made them feel.

This book would be better read to children in grades 1-3. It is about an "ugly duckling" that gets made fun of by the other little ducklings for being ugly. In the end however the ugly duckling turns into a beautiful swan. It shows that you can't "judge a book by it's cover."

Andersen's beautiful tale about the transformation of an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. Pinkney's illustrations create the magic of this fairytale as we are drawn into the ugly duckling's voyage to find where he belonged.

This a great older book. It was a cute story of how the duckling comes to be a beautiful swan when hes older. It is cute to read to elementary students because it has a great hidden lesson to learn to always be nice to everyone because when you are you get something in return.

The classic story of the ugly duckling who is made fun of and neglected who grows up to become a beautiful swan. The story about growing up to become awesome and find out who you are, the story about not judging people or things prematurely. The graphics, though compelling, were not my style. I
Show More
prefer a less watercolored and realistically muted look, personally. Its also hard to get too excited about a tale you've heard a million times before without much of a twist on it. This book is great for kids though because it teaches that things aren't always the way it seems and it shows that picking on people is wrong, also sometimes they grow up to be your boss! haha just kidding...

Pinkney's illustrations of The Ugly Duckling are more mature of nature and would be too much for small children. The are beautiful and full of life but are for a more mature audience.

Another classic! This is a beautiful story that deals with self esteem issues and not fitting in. The photos in this story were beautiful and very detailed. I have always loved this story and even have an ugly duckling charm on my charm bracelet. Every child should read this story. This particular
Show More
version was perfect for children with large font but not so simple that it might offend a bright child. I think every child who feels low about them selves should read this story!

This book is good for children because it shows that you don't have to be the most beautiful to be happy. Stay true to yourself and that's what true beauty it. What's inside. It helps kids know that they are special even if they aren't the best looking according to society.

This fantasy book is also a fairy tale, that has been told time and time again, and has a moral to the story. I love this book and have always loved this story growing up, that things aren't always as they seem. I have always loved the triumph of the "Ugly Duckling", going from ugly to the
Show More
beautiful swan. The pictures in this book are phenomenal and the author used water colors to make his pictures.

Most people who have experienced awkward stages in their lives remember reading this book. As children grow, they discover who they are among their peers. This book teaches children to empathize with the feelings of others- a difficult task for many children who have never felt like an outcast. It
Show More
teaches kids that the will to survive and focusing on moving forward are more important qualities than physical ones.

In Jerry Pinkney’s adaptation of this classic story, the reader is awed by the depth of feelings leaping from the watercolor art in this book. The many wonderful themes that make this story a classic are delicately displayed for the reader to take away whatever encouragement they may need at the
Show More
moment.

There is a duckling that looks different from his siblings and other ducklings. Other ducklings often tease him because he looks different from others, so he is always lonely and feels sad. One day, his family gets attacked by hunters, so he runs away from the pond and finds a new place to live. He
Show More
meets other animals such as a cat and hens, but they also tease him. He sees beautiful swans and admires them, but he cannot join them. The ugly duckling’s journey is full of sufferings.

“The Ugly Ducking” is one of the famous fairy tales, so there are many different books that tell the same story. But there is something that makes this book more special than others. Its illustrations are very descriptive and outstanding. It was selected as a Caldecott Honor Book in 1999. Books that have excellent illustrations become Caldecott Honor Books.

The book is suitable for age 9-12, which means elementary level students. This book has a very meaningful story. There are always children that are different from other children in schools such as disabled children and mixed-blood children, and they sometimes get discouraged because they get teased by other children. However, if they read this story, they will learn to like the way they are. Also, if the other children read this story, they will know that they should respect children who are different from them.

To sum up, this book is a wonderful children’s book, for it has remarkable illustrations that keep children’s eyes on the book and a story that gives children an important lesson.
