When the weather gets hot, so do people's tempers-- even for best friends like Kishi and Renée. This story of a summer afternoon will draw you in with spectacular collage work by illustrator Javaka Steptoe. All of the pictures are collages made from tissue and construction paper, with many found

objects accentuating as well. Steptoe brings the characters--and the summer heat-- to life with rich collages that show perspective and depth, as well as a range of genuine emotions. Karen English's text is a pleasure to read, with carefully crafted sentences that show the simple honesty of the emotions that rise--and fall--on a hot day in the city. On top of the excellent execution of the book, all of the characters are Black (with a range of skin tones), the central characters are girls, and it's got a happy ending--what's not to like?

It is a blistering hot day on Abbott Street and tempers run high between two best friends. One best friend took the very last blue ice pop when she knew that those were her friends favorite. They spend the day playing separately until they hear the sound of the neighborhood kids playing double

dutch. They both run to join in and seem to forget about their feud. The ice cream truck comes by again, twice on the same day. But again they run out of the blue ice pop with only one friend getting it. So they split it in half and they become best friends again.

This book follows two best friends on a very hot day. They refuse to talk to eachother because Kishi bought the last blue ice pop from the ice- cream truck, and those are Renee's favorite. Eventually, both girls are drawn into the sound of jump rope and go an join their friends. The girls forget

all about being mad at each other until the ice cream truck shows up again and Kishi gets the last blue ice pop... again. But this time, Kishi shares half of it with Renee, and they are best friends still!

I really enjoyed the pictures in this book, all of them are paper cut outs, or wood or twine.

I thought this was a cute story, because being a girl, I have had petty fights with my friends over no big reason, and eventually just forget why we were even mad. This is a good book for young kids who may struggle with friendships and see that one shouldn't get mad at their friend for silly things.
