This is the story of Sanu, Eric, and April who are American children living in New York City. Sanu's father is from West Africa, Eric's father came from Puerto Rico, and both of April's parents came from China. The stories describe what the families are doing together to teach the children about

their heritage. The book has very good photography and I think it is presented in a manner which would hold the attention of a young child.

The colors on the cover first caught my attention. This is a very well written and illustrated book. I think this book would be an excellent source to read if their was a student in the class from another culture. I think the class would be ready to learn of her traditions and the child would probably feel proud to describe them instead of feeling different.

A good classroom extension would be cooking since April's family included some Chinese recipes. The book includes a short healing poem the children could learn from Eric's Puerto Rican family. It might be fun to braid hair like Sanu's family from West Africa does.

This book tells about three children who live in America but they have at least one parent that did grow up in the United States.

I think it is interesting to read about and learn about different cultures and ways of going through life.

This would be a good lesson on ethnicity and friendships with

people with different cultural traditions.

Good book for younger students. I would use book to show an ELL student how they are not alone in feeling different. There are many different cultures that go through the same feelings.

This book talks about 3 children with immigrant parents. It talks about the foods they eat , the names of the dishes they prepare, and their eating customs. This book would be a good way to incorporate diversity in the classroom.

and her father is from Senegal. She discusses how she and her younger brother enjoy learning about their culture including music, dress, and food. Eric is Hispanic American and his father is from Puerto Rico. He talks about his friends who he enjoys speaking Spanish with and doing traditional dances such as the merengue. April is Chinese American and both of her parents were born in Taiwan. She talks about how she goes to Chinese school on Saturdays so that she can learn how to write in Mandarin. April also talks about the food she eats and the games that her family enjoys playing. All three children compare their culture to American culture.

Review: I think that this book is very well written and it allows the reader to get a glimpse at how children from several different ethnic backgrounds are keeping their heritage alive in America. Each child talks about what they most enjoy from their background and how it makes them unique. The author includes the names of family members, foods, dances, games, etc. that are written in their respective language. This gives the reader the opportunity to be exposed to common words in other languages. She even includes the Mandarin characters so that the reader can see what they look like. I like that the author chooses to use pictures of the children and their families to show how they live their daily lives.
