A rich man is asked to be the godparent to the son of a couple. When he agrees, the couple invites him over for dinner--but only after they have saved their money to buy a third spoon in order to entertain their guest. The man is amused that these people are so poor that they didn't even have three

spoons, but his amusement turns to envy when his hosts tell him that they have a friend who uses a different new spoon for every bite he eats. This books teaches a life lesson and represents cultural backgrounds with excellent colors and graphics.

Summary: "A Spoon for Every Bite" is about a poor couple who ask their wealthy neighbor to become the godfather of their child in order to become friends. When the couple want to invite the rich man to dinner, they save up their money and buy another spoon because they only owned two spoons. When

the wealthy man heard this, he laughed and boasted about the large amount of spoons he has in his house. He said he had so many spoons that he can use a new one each day. After hearing this, the poor couple told him that they have a friend who uses a different spoon for every bite they take. When hearing this, the wealthy man tries to do the same thing and gives the couple all of his old spoons. Soon, he buys all the spoons his money can buy and demands to meet the poor couple's friend who can use a different spoon for every bite. In the end, the wealthy man finds out that in an Indian's man culture they use tortillas as spoons, which means they eat their spoon/tortillas. Afterwards, the poor couple sells all the spoons the wealthy man gave to him which allows them to live more comfortably.

Review: The main idea of the book, "A Spoon for Every Bite" is the wealthy man tries to prove his wealth to the poor couple by using a different spoon for every bite but ultimately fails which helps the poor couple get out of poverty. In my opinion, I thought the book was very clever in regards the poor couple's friend being an Indian man who's culture is for tortillas to be spoons. However, I believe it gives a negative message to readers. In the story, the poor couple tricked the wealthy man into buying numerous spoons and giving it to him which makes him lose his wealth. As evidence, the book says "The poor compadre laughed to himself. This was just the kind of thing he and his wife had hoped would happen." The book showcased that it was okay to trick another person into losing their possessions in order to benefit themselves which I do not think is a positive message to send to young readers.

This story can manifest into so many poor to rich stories but it is a good new twist and a "Riddle" that has a moral within itself.
A rich man becomes friends with a couple and is invited to dinner. Topic of spoons is brought up and that is where the story takes a turn. A different spoon for every

bite taken. A challenge is created and the lesson does make a great point. The book has different view points that the reader could dissect and reconstruct for discussion.
Social classes, poor, rich, riddle, culture, food, moral, southwest are some topics this book could take.

A great moral message, and it's really nice to the have the bilingual edition for families and people wanting to learn the language.
