time monetarily in NEw England during the Civil war era. The father is off at war while the mother and her daughters make the best of their situation at home. The story takes you through the lives of the young girls until they reach their adulthood and eventually marry. It is a beautiful classic and this version which also includes illustrations is a great introduction into the classics for younger readers.

These girls go on to have many adventures. One is caught doing something bad in school, and that leads to her being taken out of school. This in turn leads to the girls not being allowed to go to the theater with their friends, and manuscripts end up being burned.
The novel ends 2 years later, with the girls being married, and the family being happy.
