This is the first 3 novels in the excellent Alvin Maker series. The series starts as Alvin's family is moving 'west' in the early days of America to the Ohio River valley area. As the seventh son of a seventh son, Alvin is special, a 'maker', with great magical talent. In Card's alternate history,

most individuals have a small or great amount of one magical talent. In this case, Alvin's talent is very great, but he is opposed his entire life by the Unmaker.
This book is mostly an alternate history, though it seriously address issues with Native Americans and some not so pleasant episodes in early American history. A very good series.

The first three volumes are the best; the remainder are kind of repetitive, and Card got into his potty-mouth period more heavily than usual.
