A large format picture book, with many colour illustrations, the originals painted on stone. I loved this book as a child, and remember the images very well.

Can also be tied into American history along with the story of St. Brendan the Navigator. This is the tale of a young explorer who finds his way to Newfoundland and who is converted to Christianity.

The beautiful decorations on the illustrations really make this book. As a child I loved especially the dramatic illustration of Leif with the dragon figurehead. I was surprised to find that Leif lived in very historical times, maybe only 50 years or so before the Norman conquest of England.
