This is a good story of a young girl growing into life, growing up on a Vermont farm. Ariel sees migrating geese flying over, and is encouraged by her grandmother to draw them. A quilt is conceived. Then her mother becomes pregnant and her grandmother has a stroke. The story works its way to a

satisfactory conclusion.

The illustrations are very good. I checked the book out so I could develop some appreciation for Leslie Bowman's artistry. She has an ethereal-looking line, all in black and white with an almost elusive gray. The appearance of the special quilt is left to the imagination.

This is a really interesting book about a young girl and her interests, and tragedies that strike her life. This book has some sad parts, but overall it is a very sweet story. I also liked that it still had some pictures in it, it helped bring the story to life.
