Ezra Jack Keats was really good at writing books about every day experiences.

Peter in this book wants to invite - gasp - a *girl* to his birthday party. Amy. But he can't just call her, he has to *mail* an invitation.

Naturally, she almost sees, and he sorta snaps at her. Luckily, Amy doesn't hold a
Show More
grudge, everybody's happy at the end.

It seems like so little, but this sort of thing - a special occasion, a fight with a friend - is very big to children. This book really captures a typical reaction to these events.

This is a really cute book about friendship! I just loved it as I read it! There are also so many activities you could do with this book including having the students write their own letter or invitation!

K-1. This was a cute story about a little boy that wanted to mail a special birthday invitation to a girl named Amy. He went out to mail it on a stormy night and actually ran into her while delivering the letter. He was nervous that it wouldn't be a surprise anymore and that all the boys at his
Show More
party would make fun of him.

I would use this book in a kindergarten or first grade class. It is about a little boy named Peter who wants to invite a girl named Amy to his birthday. He decided he wanted to write her a letter to invite her. It blew away and he ran into Amy and knocked her down. Amy came to his birthday anyway.

I guess you could use this book to show to younger children that it is okay for boys and girls to be friends.

Peter wants to invite his friend Amy to his party. His mom helps him write a letter to her and he goes to mail it. When he is out, it starts to storm and Peter loses the letter. He chases the letter all through the town. While chasing the letter, Peter runs into Amy and she falls to the ground. She
Show More
runs away in tears as he hides the letter from her. Peter is sad at the party because Amy doesn't show up. Finally, Amy walks in with her parrot. I thought this was a cute story for grades 2 or 3. I liked it because it showed how dedicated to Amy Peter is.

This is a cute book, although a little dark with the pictures at times it's overall a good book. This book shows that children have crushes on their peers and they don't want their friends to know. In this book Peter has a crush on a girl and wants to invite her to his party but he didn't want to
Show More
ask her at school because he didn't want his friends to find out. He mailed a letter to Amy and he thought she wouldn't get it. She didn't show up at the party until late and when she did, all the boys said "eww a girl." But Peter didn't care, he wanted Amy there.

This is about Peter who is having a birthday party and wants to invite a girl. He writes her a letter to make it special and goes to mail it. On the way a gust of wind blows it from his hand. He chases after it and bumps Amy causing her to fall down. SHe runs off crying but Peter is finally able to

mail the letter. In the end she shows up to his party just in time for cake.

This is a sweet read and should probably be read to first or second graders because they are the most critical of girls and boys. The pictures are very dark and gloomy during the book, but at the very end they are pretty colored with a vibrant background. This is to show how sad Peter was without
Show More
Amy and when Amy arrived at the birthday party Peter was happy.

Peter is having a birthday party and has invited all of his friends. He wants to right a letter to Amy, a friend who is a girl. He did not write letters to any of his other friends, just Amy because he wants it to be special. When he goes to mail the letter it begins to storm and the wind blows it
Show More
out of his hand. He chases it down the street and accidentally runs into Amy. she runs away crying and even though he mails the letter he does not think she will come since he ran into her. Everyone arrived at his party on time except Amy. She arrives late and he is very happy.

Peter was having a birthday party and wanted to invite Amy so he wrote her a letter. On his way out to put it in the mail, a strong wind came and blew it right to Amy. Peter grabbed the letter and put it in the mail box quickly. Amy was upset. She was not there when the party started but she showed
Show More
up right when it was time for cake and Peter was very happy.

Peter is having a birthday party, and he wants to invite his friend Amy. He decides to write her a letter because it is more "special" that way. He has second thoughts about inviting her because he does not think his friends will want a girl to be there, but he invites her anyway. She comes to the
Show More
party and they have a fun time.

This book is about Peter and his birthday party and a letter to Amy. Peter wants to invite Amy to his party so he writes a letter and goes out to try and mail it. The weather is not good so he has some difficulty mailing the letter. He mails the letter and Amy shows up at the party.

Peter is having a birthday party and inviting all of his friends. He wants to send one friend a special invitation but the wind and rain affect that. He then wonders if Amy will ever come to his party.

Peter is having a birthday party, and inviting just one girl - Amy.

The book concerns his troubles mailing the letter out, and his worries that Amy won't show up. Pretty realistic, I think.

Peter is inviting one girl, Amy, to his birthday party and he is writing her a letter to make it special, but on the way to the mailbox the letter gets caught in the wind. Charming story about young mix-gender relationships, although the end baffled me a little. Was it supposed to be clear what
Show More
Peter wished for? The artwork is fantastic multimedia. My untrained eye picked up water colors, acrylics, and cut paper combined in the images that create an authentic, eye catching New York. Text is embedded in the image during action pages, which are full spreads, and in white space at the start and end. Excellent for any picture book collection and a good read aloud from preschool to 1st grade.

I can use this book to reinforce the parts of a letter; name, date, salutes, and good byes.

This is a cute story about a boy inviting a girl to his birthday party. This would be great to introduce writing a letter or boys and girls playing together and how there is nothing wrong with that. I would ask my class about the weather and how would they feel inviting someone of the opposite
Show More
gender to their party etc...

Ezra Jack Keats' books are fantastic means of discussing feelings with students, allowing the teacher to ask students to examine what the characters are feeling and what parts of the text show them those feelings. A Letter to Amy would be beneficial in a classroom where the boys and the girls are
Show More
reluctant to play with each other, showing that it's okay when boys and girls are friends.

This book is one of my all-time favorites in children's literature. The story of a friendship between a boy and a girl is an important model of positive relationships in a classroom or in life. Throughout the story, the main character, Peter, also models how to write and address a letter, an
Show More
important elementary skill. This book could also be used with a precipitation lesson in science or in conjunction with other Keats books as an author study. A touching story with remarkable illustrations!

This is another great story by Ezra Jack Keats that deals with how boys and girls relate to each other when they are young. Peter wants to invite Amy to his party, and he wants it to be special, and different, she will be they only girl there. Of course, this story is coupled with wonderful images
Show More
that are signature to Keats.

I don't know how I missed this one, but I read it for the first time today and loved it. Peter is such an endearing character, and Willie is one of my favorite literary doges.

I use the book to ask kids what fears are they scared to walk through and what are they rigid about.

Peter made an invite to his friend Amy to go to his birthday party. He was scared that she doesn’t want to go to his birthday. When he tried to send the invite to Amy, it started to rain and it blew the letter around leading to him running into Amy andmaking her cry. Peter thought that Amy was
