The character of Gregory is flat and dynamic. We do not know that much about Gregory, but we do see him changing in the book from liking his shadow to really appreciating and looking out for his shadow. At the beginning of this story Gregory goes outside to look for food, and gets scared, and

leaves his shadow alone outside. After a bit of a search Gregory finds his shadow again and from then on he realizes how much he relies on his shadow. This book is an excellent example of a fantasy. Within the context of the book Gregory and his shadow are very believable, but both Gregory and his shadow talk- as does the tree and the scarecrow.

Gregory Groundhog's best friend was his shadow. They were always together and Gregory felt very brave as long as he had his shadow. One day he lost his shadow but later they found each other again. The big day for groundhogs was February 2nd which is Groundhog Day. The farmers watched for Gregory

on this day to see if he saw his shadow which meant six more weeks of winter. The next day Gregory's shadow stayed very close to him and the farmers didn't see his shadow and was happy. This story teaches children about Groundhog's Day and the superstition behind it with the good story about Gregory.

Gregory Groundhog loses his shadow. They venture out one day, and another shadow scares Gregory, and he leaves his shadow behind, outside and alone. The shadow wanders around trying to find a place to belong, but he knows the only place he belongs is back with Gregory. Gregory realizes he has lost

his shadow, and he goes out to find him. They both learn how to be brave without each other. This is a good book to read on Groundhog's Day to teach children about the wives' tale.

A cute and childish twist on Groundhog's day is presented in this book. Gregory, "loses" his shadow and finds it at the end. but it "hides" behind Gregory so he can't be seen, meaning winter is over. This book not only teaches about groundhog's day, but it also teaches about being brave and being

independent. and confiding in someone.

Gregory is a groundhog and his best friend is his shadow. They go out wondering one day and get separated because Gregory got scared. He was so scared he ran home as fast as he could and slammed his front door shut. So shadow was locked out. Shadow had no idea what to do. He asked scarecrow and

tree, but they did not know what he should do either. So, he his in a barn to keep warm. Later Gregory went o find him and he did indeed find him.

Personal Reaction:

I liked the way this book was written a lot. It was a great way to explain ti kids what groundhogs bdays is. It also could give them a chance to see who their "shadow" is.

1. Use this on groundhog day!
2. make our own shadows outside with chalk. (read book outside)
