This biorgraphy of plant breeder Luther Burbank is a perfect book for my Santa Rosa students. Burbank conducted most of his experiments and achieved his world-wide fame while living in Santa Rosa, California in the late 19th/early 20th centuries. Quackenbush wrote not only about some of Luther

Burbank's more famous developments (Shasta daisy, Santa Rosa plum, and spineless cactus), but also about how he was a controversial figure because some people thought his plant breeding smacked of "playing God". Quackenbush's use of cartoons and funny dialogue will appeal to many students who might not usually enjoy reading biographies.
