This is a gorgeously sentimental picture book by Vietnamese author Leuyen Pham, a celebration of the relationship between big sisters and little sisters. The bonds of sisterly love that are conveyed in this book reflect the sometimes contentious but loving relationship. Being a middle child I could
Show More
relate to the little sister in this book lamenting the fact that she always has to wear hand-me-downs, miss activities that were for bigger people and go to bed earlier than her big sister. The text is very simple and the artwork created using Japanese brush pen and ink with colour added digitally. Wonderful for both children and adults.

The little sister in this story wants to be just like her older sister, but there are somethings that she can not do yet. This sometimes frustrates her, but she realizes that her big sister is good at being the big sister, just like she is very good at being the little sister.

Big Sister, Little Sister, is about a little sister who is comparing herself to her big sister. The little sister loves her big sister but she knows that she is the best at being the little sister. This is a good book to read to a child who may be a little sister and feel insecure about not being
Show More
as good as her older sibling.

"Big Sister, Little Sister" is about 2 sisters doing things the other one one can't do. Even though they have their differences, the big sister will always watch over the little sister. Nice story for kids.

This book about the differences and similarities about big and little sisters was an absolute joy to read. I love the illustrations, as they look like something a child would draw, and has lots of blank white space, which is well used to place the drawings and also reminds me of how children may
Show More
draw one picture, rather small, in the middle of the page and not use the rest of the space. This really helps the voice shine through, as the whole text is written how the little sister would speak. Using these illustrations helps the reader believe the little sister wrote the book, along with the colorful language. I also enjoyed the fact that it uses comparison as well as similarity, and that these go from negative to positive throughout the book. Through this it shows realistically that being the little or big sister has its ups or downs, but that in reality, sisters wouldn’t have it any other way.

REVIEW: The Big one gets new clothes. The Little one gets hand-me-downs. The Big one does everything first. The Little one is always catching up But the little one can do some things well, and can even teach the older one a thing or two…. Big sisters and little sisters alike will agree: this is a

sassy and touching celebration of sisterhood for all ages.

I really enjoyed this picture book. One of the reasons I liked this book was because of the language. I liked how the author flipped back and forth between things that a big sister does and what a little sister does. I feel that this makes the book relatable for both older and younger sisters. The
Show More
language also shows positives to both sides of being older or younger. For example, the author wrote how the older sister gets new clothes while the younger sister gets hand-me-downs. She also writes about how the little sister can do things well also, and the little sister can teach the big sister a few things. This positivity from both angles makes this book very enjoyable.
A second reason I liked this book was because of the characters in the story. While they didn’t have names, I liked the dynamic between the sisters. I liked that it showed a real relationship between them. Some pages showed the big sister helping the little sister, while other pages showed them yelling at each other. This is a very accurate depiction of real sisters, and I like that it is not really sugarcoating anything about it.
The big idea that I picked up on in this story is that even though you may be a little jealous, family is always family no matter what.

I liked the book “Big Sister, Little Sister” because of the illustrations and the method used to tell the story. I really enjoyed the way the characters’ faces were drawn. The characters’ expressions clearly display their emotions at each part of the story. I enjoyed the way the words were
Show More
expressed on the characters’ faces. Also, I enjoyed the way the author told the story. I liked the way the author clearly distinguished and compared the two sisters. I also enjoyed how the author made a slow progression from the negative aspects of being a little sister to the more positive aspects. The main idea of this story is that although being the little is sometimes difficult due to limitations in freedom, at the same time it is also truly wonderful to be the younger sibling.

This was a great book for a few reasons. The illustrations throughout the story depict the challenges the little sister deals with. For example, there is an illustration that shows the little sister getting the hand me downs and the big sister getting to go shopping and buying brand new clothes.
Especially on the cover, the illustrations display the emotions the characters are experiencing, such as the little sister’s anger towards her happy big sister being able to buy new clothes. The characters are also believable and are very relatable. Many readers can relate to the story of how the little sister is always “catching up” to the bigger sister. The language throughout the story is very clear and organized. Readers know right away that the little sister gets the short end of the stick all the time when compared to her big sister because the big sister is always getting new clothes and all of the attention. The big idea of this story is that although the younger sister may feel down because the big sister is always the bright and shining child of the two, the younger sister can teach her big sister a few important things that she can’t teach herself.

I liked this book, it had a repetitive structure and was appealing to children. It is a great book about sisterhood, and although I am a boy and only have one older brother, there were parts of it that I still found relateable. This was from the perspective of the younger sister, the author, an

immigrant from Vietnam.

Even though I had a little brother growing up, I really enjoyed this story. The main idea of this story is that no matter what happens you should always love your sibling. In the book we read about two girls, an older sister and a younger sister. Throughout the entire book the sisters go from
Show More
disagreeing to fighting. However, no matter how different and or how much they fight, the sisters always end up loving each other in the end. This shows the reader that a brother or a sister is always there for you. The book isn’t saying that it is ok to fight with your siblings, but that it is nice to know that when it’s all done with they should still love you.

Big Sister Little Sister is a charming book about the relationship between a big sister and a little sister. I really enjoyed reading the book for a number of reasons. One reason I like the book is the illustrations because without them the book would not of been able to stand-alone. The art style
Show More
used was fun and cartoony with great colors and crisp lines. The illustrations help tell the story. They did this by using the writing and having the pictures play off the words. The writing would indicate an idea like “ The big sister is good at a lot of things. I’m the little sister I am too.” Then on the pages the words were written on there would be drawings of the big sister doing things the little sister could not, like putting on make up and playing the piano. But in a way to emphasize the point the biggest illustration on the page followed the words of “I am the little sister I am too” with a picture of her doing a painting while her bigger sister watch smiling. Another reason I really enjoyed this book is because they never gave the characters names there were just referred to as the big sister and little sister. By doing this it let the focus of the story stay on the relationship between a big sister and little sister and by focusing on the relationship it can help people understand what it like to have a sister big or little sister and the fun and pain they can be. Some other reason this was a good book is the charters are easy to relate to especially if you have a sister. Like they show how the older sister can all ways do more or gets to stay up late while the younger one is just tagging alone or trying to be just like her older sister. Almost everyone can understand this relationship whether its because you have a older or younger sibling or you have younger or older friends that follow you around. I enjoyed this book because of the simple writing, it got right to the point “ the big sister usually does things first. I’m the little sister I’m always catching up.
The message is simply about family relationships. Its about the way in which sister are different but are always there to help and teach each other new things and although siblings can drive each other nuts there is always love.

In my opinion, this book would be a great addition to any teacher’s classroom. One reason is while reading this book, I was able to notice a common theme; the illustrations play a big part. Without the illustrations, a child could still understand the book, however with them you can really
Show More
imagine what the little sister feels and what life is like for her with a big sister.
Another reason I really enjoyed this book is because of the progression of the relationship between the sisters that you can pick up on from the beginning to the end. From the beginning to the middle of the book, you can tell that the little sister is jealous of all of the things her big sister gets to do. She makes is seem like they are in constant competition. Most of the pictures from the beginning to middle are those that show the little sister being annoyed or frustrated towards the big sister. From the middle to the end of the book, the little sister talks enviously towards her big sister. For example she says, “The Big Sister tells all the good stories! I’m the little sister. I get to listen!” The illustrations start to show her big sister helping her with various activities and they look like they really get along.
