This is the story of the first Thanksgiving. It is focuses on the Hopkins family and their adventure in coming over in the Mayflower. Through reading it you see how their friendship with the Indians helps give them much more than just food to help them survive.

I liked the book. It is a neat way

to show children about Thanksgiving. It had nice illustrations. I understand that Caledcott awards are based on the illustrations.

For extending this book, I would have my class watch Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving movie! Classroom discussion over what the children are thankful for would also be insighful as well.

Summary: A story about the first settlers celebrated Thanksgiving.

Personal Opinion: Alot of text that's for 7+ kids but the subject matter is for maybe 2+. The art work is a mixture of cartoon and expressionism.

Classroom extension: 1) Figure out what kind of food was served for Thanksgiving and
Show More
what other cultures used for Thanksgiving now days. 2) What really happen at the real Thanksgiving, such as were the Indians that nice?

Personal Reaction:
I am so grateful to these Pilgrims for all that they overcome. I am proud to live in America. If if wasn't for their sacrifice and struggles I wouldn't be here today.

Classroom Extension:
1. Have a Thanksgiving feast. Full of corn and other foods that the Pilgrims ate that day.
2. Along with our feast, we could create pilgrim hats, bonnets and Indian feather headbands to wear while we eat.

on that journey. They landed on Plymouth, for a year they went through some struggles why’ll they were there. This is the time that they made a celebration of Thanksgiving, the first Thanksgiving feast that the Colony had with the Native Indians there. The book goes on to talk about the hardships that they endured the in Plymouth in the winter, and when they began to plant crops with the help of the Native Indians from that area. The Pilgrim became good friends with the Native Indians, and had many Thanksgiving Celebrations.

Personal Reflection: The book has great illustration of the situations that the Pilgrims had on their journey to the New World, and when they were in Plymouth with the Native Indians. This is the reason we celebrate Thanksgiving today.

Classroom Extension:
1.The teacher can have the students make pictures of the celebration of Thanksgiving and have them make a Turkey drawing using their hand to make the picture of a Turkey.
2.The teacher can have them make Pilgrim hats, Feathers on a head band that the Native Indians used on their heads.

The journey of the Pilgrims to England told simply for younger children or for a shorter version than Stories of the Pilgrims by Pumphrey. The author clearly acknowledges God and the Puritans Christian beliefs in this retelling.

This book is a good read right before Thanksgiving because it gives insight to the harsh weather, food, and sickness challenges Pilgrims faced when they first came to America on the Mayflower. They got help from Native Americans and celebrated with a great November harvest.
