Description

Located in the Villa Belvedere in the Vatican and completed 1n 1574 by the great Renaissance architect, Donato Bramante, with extraordinarily ingenious architecture, Bramante's staircase, then referred to as "lumacha," or "snail," still garners the greatest wonder and admiration. It has survived--almost completely, in its original form. The book shows beautiful and detailed photographs and includes extensive pictorial documentation on the Vatican and its environs in the 16th and 17th century.

This is a beautifully photographed catalogue of the art to be seen at the Vatican museum in Rome, particularly the paintings of Michelangelo and Raphael. It includes the Sistine Chapel paintings (by Michelangelo, Botticelli, Perugino, Signorelli, Ghirlandaio and Rosselli), the Stanzas by Raphael in

the papal apartments, and other Raphael paintings in the Vatican Picture Gallery, and the Raphael Loggias. The beautiful photographic reproductions by Bruno del Priore include many foldout pages showing large murals and ceilings, with diagrams to help identify each character in the painting. There are beautiful closeup details of some of the most important scenes. Lengthy essays by Antonio Graziano and Dr. Francisco Rossi explain the history and significance of the paintings, and help to understand some of the more obscure allegories and references. This is a fine souvenir for tourists, and a good reference for students of art history.
