Description

"In Gift and Mystery we read 'For every priest, in every age, the greatest task is each day to discover his own priestly "today" in the "today" of Christ.' John Paul II understands that the event of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ in world history continues daily in a special way in the priestly brotherhood of those who have been chosen to follow in his footsteps--and indeed in every man and woman, all called through the gift of faith to a life of holiness. As a Catholic, I fear the consequences of giving the Pope a bad review. I wil state, however, that Gift and Mystery is not a theological book. It is a biographical reflection on Karol Wojtyla's decision to enter the priesthood, experience in the seminary and his first priestly assignments. A quick

and enjoyable read, it offers no real spiritual guidance and is directed mostly towards the intended audience of priests that can fondly relate to the young proest's experiences. Pope John Paul expresses his appreciation to the many people who crossed his path with an uncanny memory for names and places. Given that, I would rank the book as I would any of my other ones and reserve the 5's for those that change my life. Now, I'm off to confession.
