This could have been an interesting book as Pope John Paul II narrates his ascent to the papacy and his work in that office. Instead of focusing on his own story, John Paul constantly gets sidetracked with describing in detail the duties and responsibilities of church officials as well as the

intricacies of Roman ceremony. The result, is almost intolerably dull. There are, however, moments of insight which leave the listener contemplating spiritual realities and the narrative does maintain interest as long as John Paul is describing his personal history. Mr. Tabori's reading is appropriately solemn and fatherly and he makes the interesting sections come to life though he is unable to save the duller passages.
