World of Invention

Designed to answer the most frequently asked questions in science, technology, medicine and transportation, as well as everyday living, World of Invention focuses on developments that have occurred during the last 200 years. Although many classic inventions like the light bulb and automobile are covered, this unique reference also discusses many of the world's less heralded inventions -- liquid correction fluid, vacuum cleaner, fax machine, among others -- and their creators. While inventors of all nationalities are included. a special effort has been made to include women, minorities and lesser-known inventors for whom information is not always readily available.
Entries for inventors and inventions are arranged alphabetically and range from 100 to 2,500 words in length. Invention entries include identity of inventor, an explanation of why he or she developed the object, a description of the invention and a discussion of its impact on society. Subject and keyword indexes help users find the information they need quickly and easily.
