Description

As battle cries of the American Revolution echo in the distance, servants flutter about preparing for one of New York society’s biggest events: the Schuylers’ grand ball. Descended from two of the oldest and most distinguished bloodlines in New York, the Schuylers are proud to be one of their fledgling country’s founding families, and even prouder still of their three daughters—Angelica, with her razor-sharp wit; Peggy, with her dazzling looks; and Eliza, whose beauty and charm rival that of both her sisters, though she’d rather be aiding the colonists’ cause than dressing up for some silly ball.

Still, she can barely contain her excitement when she hears of the arrival of one Alexander Hamilton, a mysterious, rakish young colonel and General George Washington’s right-hand man. Though Alex has arrived as the bearer of bad news for the Schuylers, he can’t believe his luck—as an orphan, and a bastard one at that—to be in such esteemed company. And when Alex and Eliza meet that fateful night, so begins an epic love story that would forever change the course of American history.

I love the musical Hamilton , and have started reading everything I can get my hands on about Alexander Hamilton since seeing the show. When I heard an author I had enjoyed in the past had written a young adult version of the story of Alex and Eliza, I knew I had to check it out.

Alex and Eliza was
Show More
pretty good. I found, for me, it started out a little slow. I know the buildup was supposed to create conflict and tension before they admit their love, but it actually had me putting the book down a few times to pick up other books. It took me a while to actually finish the book because of this.

But once this story got going, I couldn't put it down. Even knowing how the true story ends, I was in suspense. De La Cruz made Alex and Eliza and all the real-life characters surrounding them come alive again.

So stick with this book. Give it some time. It's worth it in the end.

The way I would describe this book is a Young Alexander Hamilton AU where Alex is whipped for Eliza and Eliza doesn't have to sing Helpless because she says "I like to think I'm not like any other girl".

Eliza Schuyler is a young woman that wants to do more with her life than marry a rich military

man. But when she meets the dashing and rising star Alexander Hamilton, that still doesn't change. She finds him irritating and despicable because he showed up to court-martial her father for something even he admits her father shouldn't be held accountable for. Fast-forward a few years later and Eliza is still looking for a way to help her country and contribute to the new young nation.

Alex was so cute when it came to his feelings for Eliza. But it seems so far fetched knowing about his dalliances during his bachelorhood. Keeping those additional details aside this book was a cute romance that started out as very heavily one-sided to something mutual and sweet.

Alex and Eliza has taken the world by storm. Whether the play by Lin-Manuel Miranda or the novel by Melissa De La Cruz people are craving for more information about the Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and his wife Eliza Schuyler.

With Alex and Eliza, Melissa De La Cruz brings to life the love
Show More
story of these two Revolutionary figures in a fictional tale, which weaves together a few facts too, since there is not much information about Eliza, the author had to take liberties to construct a story that was somewhat, but not fully, accurate. This story
is less of a historical novel and more of a romance, and spans from the year they first met in 1777 to their marriage in 1780.

Hamilton is seen as a smitten dashing knight who sweeps the princess, Eliza, off her feet. But it is also a Prince and the Pauper story since Hamilton was an orphan who did not have a name or financial means. The bright, ambitious, but penniless Hamilton is drawn to practical Eliza, falling deeply in love. His prestige comes from being the aide-de-camp to General George Washington.

This book is charming and interesting. These two characters have a voice and a personality that are engaging. Hopefully, it will draw people to find out more about the early history of America.

A quick, charming romantic account of the courtship of Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler. Perfect for anyone who is Hamilton-obsessed and can't get enough of this founding couple. I flew through it in a day.

I didn't finish this because the audiobook returned itself before I was done, but I wasn't really into it enough to check it out again. I was probably about halfway through, and I think it's a solid choice for kids who like historical fiction, romance, or Hamilton (...obvs). The writing was great,
Show More
and there are definite moments of humor and lightness mixed with the historical details.

Very sweet version of the courtship of Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler. I definitely liked all the tiny musical callouts throughout the book. That being said, the book did not rely on the musical to tell the story. It told the more accurate timeline of events, with Angelica's marriage and
Show More
Peggy's courtship. I am in for the rest of the series.

This novel started well and had me chuckling on occasion but the second-half fizzled out so much I was glad when I reached the last page. While I liked Eliza for her determination and strength of character, for me, Aunt Gertrude was the star of "Alex and Eliza". She was a delight.

Unfortunately,
Show More
like so many YA novels, this one had potential but didn't deliver.

My only real beef with this book is the lack of an author's note; when it comes to historical fiction, an explanation of which bits were made up and what sources the author used is essential and neglecting this is unforgivable, as far as I'm concerned. The novel itself is a fluffy, easy-to-read

tale.

I had recently read Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow, which I highly recommend. I have been supplementing my non-fiction with historical fiction about the same topics; however, this idea has not turned out quite as planned. I usually prefer the non-fiction and this one is no exception.

Alex & Eliza
Show More
is set during the American Revolution; however, the characters do not speak or act in a historically accurate manner. Be aware if you read this that the entire second half (and perhaps more) is pure imagination and has nothing to do with what actually happened. Not that it has to conform to facts. It is fiction, after all. But Alexander Hamilton led a colorful life, and there is plenty of material to transform into a fictional account without becoming massively historically inaccurate.

I decided to treat it as a romance, and ignore that it is supposedly about real people, so I could finish it. I do not particularly care for romance novels, with rare exceptions, so if you like the genre, you will probably enjoy this book more than I did. I listened to the audio book read by Casandra Campbell. She does a nice job of giving voice to the characters.
