Description

Juvenile Fiction. Picture Book Fiction. HTML: Working up the courage to take a big, important leap is hard, but Jabari is almost absolutely ready to make a giant splash. Jabari is definitely ready to jump off the diving board. He's finished his swimming lessons and passed his swim test, and he's a great jumper, so he's not scared at all. "Looks easy," says Jabari, watching the other kids take their turns. But when his dad squeezes his hand, Jabari squeezes back. He needs to figure out what kind of special jump to do anyway, and he should probably do some stretches before climbing up onto the diving board. In a sweetly appealing tale of overcoming your fears, newcomer Gaia Cornwall captures a moment between a patient and encouraging father and a determined little boy you can't help but root for..… (more)

Jabari decides that he is ready to jump off the high diving board at his local swimming pool in this engaging summertime picture-book from author/illustrator Gaia Cornwall. Having finished his swimming lessons and passed his swim test, the young boy believes he can take that leap. Then he actually

confronts the ladder to thet high board, and he finds himself a little intimidated. His loving father is there, however, to talk him through his fears, and help him take a chance...

A debut from Cornwall, Jabari Jumps is an appealing book, featuring an involving story of overcoming one's fears and trying something new that many younger children will find relevant to their own life experiences. The loving support and understanding that Jabari's father offers provides the necessary note of reassurance, letting child listeners know that adults are there to help them reach their goals. Cornwall's artwork, created in pencil, watercolor and collage, before being colored digitally, is likewise appealing, capturing the fun of a summer day, and the sense of vertigo that Jabari experiences, looking down at the pool from his perch on the board. Recommended to young children just starting a new venture, especially if it involves swimming or diving.

“The diving board was high and maybe a little scary…” (p.8), but after passing his swim test, Jabari, a young African American boy, is ready to try a jump. With the support of his father and younger sister watching on, Jabari overcomes his fears and takes the leap. Corwall’s watercolor and

collage-like illustrations paint a refreshingly inclusive representation of children and families. An encouraging tale of courage that provides an instructive and relatable story suitable for beginning readers or an engaging read aloud.

A great book about overcoming things we are afraid of doing.

diverse picture book (bravery, swimming; older preschoolers/kinder ages 3? and up)
* prominently features diverse characters: Jabari (braver than he thinks!) his dad and sister, and a diverse crowd of other pool-goers.
* would work for preschooler storytime (if they can sit through longer stories),

or grades K-2. This is a longer, more serious story (no rhyming or cartoony gimmicks) that shows Jabari first doubting, then conquering his fear of the diving board at the public pool. Younger kids who can sit through a longer, quieter story will enjoy it (there are still a lot of sweet and funny moments they can identify with and the pacing of the text is perfect for a more serious but not too serious story), but I think older kids who are tackling fears of their own would appreciate it on a higher level.

This is a cute book about a young boy at the pool with his brother and father. He has finished his swim lessons and wants to go off of the high dive. Fear over takes him. He tells his dad that maybe he'll jump next time. He begins to make excuses. The way he comes to his final decision reminded me

of the self-talk kids and adults do when they are afraid. My sixth grade students loved this book

This was a cute and simple read. It may be better geared towards younger grade levels like pre-K-2. I think this books signifies how trying new things for the first time can be scary. It is good to take your time until you are ready. It was really sweet how Jabari's dad reminds him how he can wait

until another day, and does not make it a big deal. After the conversation he has with his dad, I think it was encouraging to Jabari and made him feel at ease and ready to take a leap off the diving board. This read can introduce the topic of fear, bravery, courage, and achieving a goal.
