Description

Inspired by folktales about fools from around the world, brothers Mac and Mac Noodlehead exasperate Uncle Ziti, are fooled by their friend Meatball, and make a garden for their mother.

Description

Although Mac and Mac are as hollow-headed as, well, noodles, they are certain Mom will bake them a cake if they gather some firewood for her. In the woods, they run into cousin Meatball, who tricks the Noodleheads out of their hard-earned kindling with imaginary clairvoyant powers. Oh no! Fortunately, the gullible Noodleheads unwittingly accomplish an even greater task for Mom--and earn their beloved cake, after all!

Mac and Mac, the noodleheads who take everything literally and are easily fooled, are convinced by mean bully Meatball that he can see the future. He also fakes them into believing he has magic seeds. But all ends well when the future eventually arrives and a garden takes bloom.

graphic novels are humorous books that young children will appreciate. (One 5-year-old who I babysit picked this particular title as his favorite out of a dozen or so books that we read together.) In the vein of Amelia Bedelia, the Noodleheads often take certain phrases too literally, resulting in chaos and comedy. Other times they are simply oblivious to the obvious; for example, in this book they sit on the a branch that they are trying to saw off of a tree. But somehow everything works out happily in the end for everyone involved.

These books are a fun introduction to graphic novels for the youngest readers. In addition, I appreciate the authors' note at the end that describes the long history of noodlehead stories and their significance.
