It's dinosaur time over in the Picture-Book Club to which I belong, and this hilarious picture-book was one of our official selections! Reluctantly accompanying his mother on her errands, a bored young boy finds his day transformed when, instead of lollipops or balloons, he is given real live
Show More
dinosaurs at the various businesses they visit. Soon, the boy finds himself being trailed by a triceratops, a stegosaurus, and a pterosaur, while his frazzled mother wonders what they will do with such huge, unwieldy creatures.

A surreal adventure in the style of Billy Twitters and His Blue Whale Problem, this delightful story takes a common childhood fantasy - that of having a dinosaur for a pet - and runs with it, perfectly capturing the reactions of both boy and mother. The accompanying ink and watercolor artwork of David Small - whose Imogene's Antlers has always been a personal favorite of mine - accentuates the humorous contrast in each scene, adding to the reader's enjoyment. With its well-matched text and art, When Dinosaurs Came With Everything is a book that young dinosaur fans will relish!

Great dinosaur picture book! Explains how children can find something adventuresome in the common ordinary parts of life with a little make-believe thrown in. Good book!

Great for all ages. The story is about recieving a dinosaur with everything you buy. We could have the children write a story about what they would do if they had their on dinosaur.

Dinosaurs are the new toy, and they come with everything, and I mean everything! When the boy doesn't want to do anything anymore, things start to become fun, since dinosaurs are involved.

This book is a fantastical tale about a boy and his mother, and the day that dinosaurs came with everything. The book takes us through the boring errands of the adult world, which suddenly become adventurous with the rewards of dinosaurs, real dinosaurs, instead of the usual balloon or lollypop.

The book is humorous and the story is easy to read. The illustration add to the humor as they dramatize the life sized dinosaurs and the mayhem of such an adventurous day.

I loved this book! I enjoyed both the text and the illustrations. I thought the humor of getting a dinosaur with everything was very creative. I enjoyed watching the boy’s facial expressions as the pages progressed and he obtained more and more dinosaurs. I related to the mothers stress and worry
Show More
of what to do with all these dinosaurs. The ending was the best when the mother came around and saw how great the dinosaurs were and surprisingly desired more. I would love to share this book with my class. I think they would really like it!

This book is a fictional fantasy book. The art is all hand drawn illustrations. The book is about a little boy who went shopping with his mom and all of the stores handed out dinosaurs with any purchase. The reading level is second to fourth grade. The curicular connection is science because the
Show More
book would be a good intro to learning about dinosaurs.

This EB White Read Aloud Award winner had me laughing out loud. The story of a young boy who is unhappily accompanying his mother on their weekly Friday errands when suddenly the dull routine is brightened by the unexpected: everyone is giving away free dinosaurs with their good. From doughnuts and
Show More
dinosaurs to hair cuts and dinosaurs the boy is delighted and the mother is…frazzled. This story highlights the every so familiar gap between children and adults. The child finds something delightful and wonderful while the adult finds it ridiculous and inconvenient. In the end the mother is won over and visits the doughnut shop again to get some dinosaurs of her own.

The illustrations in this book do not have a polished look which is occasionally distracting. However, the artist had a way of drawing your attention to the focal point of the illustrations by providing additional detail or concentration of color.

A little boy experiences things a little differently on what was supposed to be an ordinary day of errands with mom. When he would normally get a balloon or sticker from all different businesses, he finds that he is pleasantly surprised. All the business owners are giving away dinosaurs for the day

and he ends up keeping them all. He even encourages his mom to enjoy them too.

Fun book. The book entertains the idea that when running errands with his mother,a boy is offered a dinosaur with every purchase. The premise will appeal to children who love dinosaurs, hate running errands with their mom and want to feel in control of their lives. ie. "mom, can we keep him,
Show More
please" "Alright" (mom gives in) Creative use of dinosaur's attributes (pterodactyl cleans out gutters). Suspense as to whether or not the dinosaurs will stay with the family.(they do). A lesson of "when life gives you lemons..."

Kids will so love the story and the pictures. Would stimulate an interesting discussion of how "freebies" abound if you just look for them and appreciate them.

A little boy thinks it's going to be another boring errand day with his mom. He soon finds out that this day is different because with every purchase, he gets his very own dinosaur. The mother is not crazy about this idea at first, but in the end, she learns to just go with it and even makes a last
Show More
trip at the end of the day to get more.

I can relate to the mother taking her child on errands, accumilating "extras" on the way. With children comes unpredictability and sometimes we need to just go with it like the mother in the story did.

In the classroom, I could have the children 1) write about what they would do if they had their own dinosaur and draw a picture of it or 2) talk about their own experiences during outings with their mom or dad.

Does your child love dinosaurs? As the back flap notes, as a child, Elise Broach often visited the Dinosaur Hall at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and has returned often with her own children as her husband is a biologist there. Broach has written a wonderful book that is
Show More
fun, imaginative and full of dinosaurs. Your child will build up their vocabulary with all the dinosaur names and they'll have fun telling the story and describing the illustrations in their own words.

Although his mother is a little worried, a young boy is delighted to discover that every shop in town is giving away real dinosaurs to their customers. I found this book very funny and entertaining. Reaction: The illustrations were very useful in showing both the size of the dinosaurs and the
Show More
characters’ reactions to the dinosaurs. The facial expressions were one of the best parts of the book. I can imagine almost any child connecting with the main character as he lives out a fantasy of making errands more fun. You want to do a dance of glee with him when he finds out you can get two dinosaurs for getting a shot at the doctor’s office. Adults connect too both with the concern of the moms, the fantasy/glee of the child, and the happiness the mom experiences once she figures out how to get the dinosaurs to do chores. This is a great use of humor and a very clever story.

Cute story about helpful dinosaurs given out instead of the usual toys and stickers by the local merchants. Although the first-person narrator's mother is not initially pleased with having them, "Pretty soon, my mom had thought of chores for all of my dinosaurs. But I didn't mind. It just meant
Show More
they were part of the family." So ultimately this is a book about families, what makes them and how they hold together.

Genre: Fantasy

Review: This story is so funny! It is fantasy because one, dinosaurs don't exist today, and two, they are not handed out for buying doughnuts, going to the dentist, or getting a hair cut! It is a humorous story about how a boy gets a dinosaur for each of these things while his mother
Show More
is just trying to imagine the fact of having dinosaurs around her house. Comical and very appealing to boys, but still fantasy.

Character: The mother is one of the main characters of this story. I would deem her a dynamic character. All we know about her is that she does not know what she is going to do with all the dinosaurs her son is getting for random things that you shouldn't get a dinosaur for. By the end though, she finds them very useful and puts them to work for her. She gets use to the idea of having these new members to the family around and even goes back to to the doughnut shop to buy more doughnuts in order to get more dinosaurs to have at the house! Therefore, she is a dynamic character because she changes her attitude towards these beasts and ends up accepting them.

Media: watercolor and ink

With beautiful watercolored images, this book includes a hilariously accurate depiction of how awkward it would be have dinosaurs wandering around town. I loved that in place of stickers or a lollipop given at a store or doctor's office, a dinosaur was given instead. Very cute.

The main character, a young boy, does not want to run errands with his mother. That is, until he finds out that all the shops are giving away dinosaurs with every purchase. He's soon very eager to cross all the items off their list. His mother suddenly isn't. How will they care for half a dozen

dinosaurs?
This is a great book. It's imaginative and fun and the pictures are really cute. It's accessible to boys and girls and can get any child interested in dinosaurs reading. It's appropriate for beginning and early readers.

I recently read this for about the twelth time and I find it just as much fun now as I ever did. The mother woefully unhappy about this dino deal that the son can't get enough of is all done so cleverly that it would be hard not to laugh as the day just gets more and more absurd. Beautiful book.

This picture book, depicting a day where everyone gets a dinosaur for each thing they purchase or do, would be an appealing read-aloud for elementary school students. The illustrations of the dinosaurs, done from different perspectives in order to emphasize their size, would be easy to show to a
Show More
group. The images themselves show a lot of whimsy and humor. Sometimes the text blends in with the illustrations, but otherwise they work together well. Some of the funniest parts are when the text differs from the image, like when the boy tells his mother that he has nothing to do with the dinosaur following them but he is shown sticking a doughnut out the window for the dinosaur.

This fictional story is also informational because it introduces several common dinosaurs in the illustrations and text, though it does not provide any scientific information. It could serve as an introduction to a unit on dinosaurs. On the flip side, wannabe paleontologists who read a lot of non-fiction on the topic may enjoy this story and seek out more fiction about the giant reptiles. This fun text could serve a lot of different purposes with a wide range of readers.

This is a really clever book. How often have you dreaded being schlepped around on someones errand day? Usually errand days are non eventful...except for the day that dinos came with EVERYTHING! No balloons at the barber shop - but you do get a dino today! Loved the ending too!

Resigned to a boring day of grown-up chores, a boy discovers that today is a magical day when dinosaurs are a free gift with every purchase. Mom has trouble adjusting. Will they ever be part of the family?

Review: This book is about dinosaurs and would be an interesting book for children to read. Boys at this age would love a book about dinosaurs because they tend to choose things to read that they are interested in.

Summary: The book was about a little boy who was upset that he had to run errands
Show More
with his mom one morning, until he got to the bakery. When his mom bought him a doughnut the baker told him that he got a free dinosaur. Everywhere they went that day they would get a free dinosaur. His mom was very scared and didn't want to keep the dinosaurs at their house. After her son begged for them to stay she agrees and they travel with the dinosaurs following behind them. When they get back to the house the dinosaurs are playing in the backyard and making a mess. The boys mom finally sees that the dinosaurs can actually be helpful and they start doing chores for her. When the little boy asks to get more dinosaurs, his mom agrees and he was very excited.

Argument: Overall this story was very well written, but the illustrations were a little different. The book is very unrealistic and I think that is why children would love this book. At the beginning of the book the little boy and his mom go to the bakery and there is a sign that reads "buy a dozen get a dinosaur." They agree that they must mean a dinosaur toy so they buy a dozen donuts. As they were leaving the cashier said "don't forget your dinosaur." All of a sudden a ginormous triceratops cam out from the back.

The message of this book is that although you might not want to do something, it might not always turn out to be that bad. The little boy in the story was very upset when he found out that he had to run errands with his mom. But surprisingly after a weird and eventful day, he doesn't want it to end.
