Description

Overview: Family Letters and Activities (for use with Glencoe Mathematics Applications and Connections Courses 1,2, and 3). Included for each chapter: Family Letter, and Family Activity (each course has 13 chapters). As their sons and daughters reach middle school, many parents and guardians are not sure how to proceed with mathematics. Many are intimidated by their own perceived weakness in the subject. Yet most parents want to help their children succeed in mathematics so that they can acquire the skills necessary to get a good job. The goal of family involvement in mathematics is not to teach specific concepts, but for teachers and parents to work together to help students develop curiosity and an enthusiasm for solving problems. In the process, parents can extend the learning that takes place in school. You can provide support in three ways:1. by communicating with parents about what is happening in your classroom,2. by providing take-home activities for students and parents to complete,3. and by inviting parents and other family members to school to share information. The family letters in this book are to be sent to parents/guardians, or given to students to take home prior to beginning the indicated chapter. The letter informs parents of the requirements of the chapter and helps them understand how the mathematics students are learning is applicable to the world in which we live. On the back of each letter is a Family Math Activity for parents or guardians to work through with their children.
