"Breakaway" is the story of Lily James (L.J.), a young girl who loves soccer. However, like many young, talented sports players, LJ lets her talent go to her head. She starts losing her temper and alienating her friends, family, and teammates. When her behavior leads her to quality time on the

bench, it's time for LJ to get a new perspective.
I enjoyed reading this book, and I think my students would enjoy it too. Many of my students, especially my boys, are soccer fanatics. Although this book is about a girls' soccer team, I think all students will be able to learn the lessons about sportsmanship and being part of a team that this story teaches. I also think that the girls will enjoy reading a sports book with a strong female main character. Appropriate for grades 5 and up.
