Karen Robards is a New York Times best selling author with over thirty books to her credit. I had never read Robards before Shattered.

Little Marisa Garcia is afraid of the woods near her new home. She knows there are shadow people hiding there - and they're watching her.....and she's right.

Fast

forward thirty years. Lisa Grant has been assigned to work cold cases for Scott Buchanan, the District Attorney. While going through the file of a family gone missing - the Garcias - Lisa is stunned by a photo in the file. The mother of the family is a dead ringer for herself. As Lisa follows up with the case, it seems that someone is just as determined that she won't. Complicating things further are her feelings for Scott - their pasts are intertwined -will their future be as well?

Now having never read Robards before I had no idea of her writing style. For those who love romantic suspense, I would say - put her to the top of your list. She skillfully combines romantic tension with an interesting plot. I was happily ensconced on my couch for the day with a wicked head cold and was quite happy reading steamy scenes and smoldering glances. The mystery is really not the main thrust of the plot, more the vehicle to carry the relationship between Lisa and Scott.

I do prefer my mysteries a bit more convoluted, if you will. I did have the plot figured out before the end. The 'bad guys' are easily identified, as are the red herrings. But it was a thoroughly entertaining read for the day.

Fans of Sandra Brown, Linda Howard or Julie Garwood would enjoy Karen Robards.

Good romantic/suspense. Unique mystery but ending too abrupt.

Secrets, betrayal and a mysterious family history plague the heroine in this book. It is one of the best mysteries I have read in a while. Highly recommend it.

When Lisa Grant moves back home to care for her mother, she must take a job as research assistant to the local district attorney, even though she has been a lawyer for a number of years. The DA just happens to be a Scott Buchanan whom she's known since they were both children. Although she finds

him annoying, she is strongly attracted to him. While performing research, Lisa discovers a cold case file that has a photo in it of a young woman who looks exactly like her. As she starts investigating, lethal accidents start happening to her and she realizes that someone will kill to keep the details of this case secret. With the help of Scott and others in the DA's office she tries to solve the case before before she is killed.

This was a very suspenseful book and the identity of the killer was totally unexpected.

I enjoyed this story about Lisa Grant a research assistant to the DA in her home town. She has a mother who is ill, a estranged father, she is working for a childhood friend that she always drove crazy, and is dating the rich son of one of her father's friends. She is assigned to cold cases in the

basement of the law firm where she is temporaily working and discovers that a family of 4 went missing when she was a child and becomes interested in this case. Because of her interest bad thing start happening to her family so she confides in her boss and they began looking into this case along with a group of misfit teenagers that need something to do.

This was a fast read and like I said at the beginning the plot was interesting. I would recommend this book.

Shattered
3.5 Stars

The premise has potential, but the execution is not up to Robards standards.

The pacing is off with the build up to both the mystery and the romance slow and often tedious. That said, the last 150 pages are intense and exciting and the resolution satisfactory.

The romance is a
Show More
solid love/hate relationship. Scott and Lisa are both engaging characters, particularly Scott who has had to work twice as hard to achieve his success given his family life, and you cannot help but admire him. Lisa, on the other hand, comes across as somewhat spoiled and self-absorbed but she obviously cares for her mother and Scott, which makes her more likable as the story progresses. Scott and Lisa have excellent chemistry but also tend to bicker incessantly, which may rub some readers the wrong way.

The secondary characters are very superficially drawn, and as such the ultimate revelation of the villain comes out of nowhere and the explanation of events and motives is unrealistic.

All in all, not the worst but definitely not the best that Robards has written.

The storyline here is actually not what I was expecting, considering I borrowed this book through the Audible Escape service. It's a pretty solid mystery, with just a touch of very compelling romance and rather likable characters. The ending is built up to well, with a nice twist element just
Show More
subtle enough to not be fully predictable as the arc heads that way, while still being believable.

Lisa Grant has been taking care of her ailing mother and working for the District Attorney's office when she is late for a court date and is assigned to work on sorting through cold cases in the basement. When a colleague shows her a file with a picture of a family, she realizes that the mother
Show More
could be her twin. This leads her to begin investigating the case. When the danger she imagines becomes real, Lisa finally includes her boss, DA Scott Buchanan, who is her childhood crush, in the research into the case. What she doesn't realize is that what she finds may change the perception she has of her entire life.

Shattered is an engaging romantic suspense. The mystery takes many twists and turns as Lisa investigates, creating an entertaining plot, however, there are some disturbing aspects to the romance. At times, Scott, who is the love interest and Lisa's boss, doesn't treat her very well and he is the one who turns up most of the important clues even though she is the one who initiated the investigation. One element of the story that adds depth is Lisa taking care of her mother who has ALS. Overall, Shattered is an enjoyable suspense/mystery with a less than stellar romance. 3 1/2 stars
