Junie B. is very excited about graduating, so excited, in fact, that she wants to wear her white graduation gown everywhere. Naturally she spills grape juice on it and has to draw purple polka dots to hide it. The other children tease her, but when she starts crying “that meanie Jim” gets the
Show More
whole class to draw polka dots on their gowns too!

This is a great transition book for children. It has chapters which is great for children who are moving from picture books to novels. This book is about Junie B. Jones graduating. Graduation often means that change is coming from some where and things are not going to be the same. This book is a
Show More
great one to use with patients who are dealing with change in some way and who would resonate with this witty and quirky character.

Junie B. Jones Is a Graduation Girl by Barbara Park is a comical realistic nonfiction book for younger readers. This book is full of the mischievous adventures of the kinder garter Junie B. The book follows several about this character and her kindergarten experiences. Junie B. is getting ready to

graduate kindergarten and she’s not too sure she is ready for the next step. After celebrating her sixth birthday, Junie B.’s mom tucks her in and reminds her she is graduating from kindergarten on Friday. Her mom reassures her this is an exciting event and she is ready to go to first grade the following year. The week at school is filled with graduation preparation, including a poem writing activity that ends with Junie B. in the principal’s office. Back in the classroom, Junie B. and her classmates get their “cats and gowns”, and to Junie B. and the rest of her class’s surprise, it is not a cat they are getting but a cap. Once home with her cap and gown, Junie B. sneaks it into her bedroom to show her dolls and manages to spill grape juice all over it. She uses purple marker to draw polka dots all over the uniform and quickly puts the cap and gown back in the box and returns it to the top of the refrigerator until she takes it to school on Friday. When she gets there and puts on her cap and gown, everyone laughs because hers has purple spots all over it. Mrs., Junie B.’s teacher, takes her into the hall and tries to calm the crying graduate down. The teacher, along with Junie B.’s parents, convince her that she can still graduate and she returns to the classroom. She is surprised by all of her classmates who have taken markers and put polka dots all over their cap and gowns too. The realities of life for a kindergartner are that little problems are huge deals. They always get things mixed up, like Junie B.’s misunderstanding of what a cap and gown is. They’re over exuberance gets them into trouble, but it usually isn’t the end of the world. Youngsters can identify with ruining something and thinking they will get into so much trouble that they don’t ask for an adult’s help to solve a (simple) problem. Park uses so much humor in the character of Junie B. to help show young readers a better way to handle situations that they, as Junie B. Jones does, might find themselves in. In the kindergarten setting, there are many characters that are a reality…Meanie Jim, That Grace, Lucille, Mrs., Principal, etc. Dealing with the prospect of leaving Room 9 and becoming part of the bigger kids group at school is a common fear among any child getting ready to leave kindergarten. Park has a great sense of humor she uses to help convey the message that moving on can be scary, but also very fun.

isGenre: Realistic Fiction

This book is a good example of realistic fiction because it is a plot-line that could be seen in everyday life and doesn't take a lot of imagination to understand what is going on. Everyday activities occur, such as going to work and to school. The point of view is in

first person, as seen through the protagonist, Junie B. Jones', eyes.

This book is about Junie B. Jones, a little girl's adventures in school. There are several series of these books , but this one is about her kindergarten graduation. She spills juice on her gown and is laughed at by the class. Later they feel bad and put dots on their gowns to make Junie B. feel

better.

I didn't read these books as a kid, but really enjoyed reading them all in my classrooms with students. The writing is so wonderful and you really identify with the character at so many levels. I always recommend these books to parents.

In the classroom, I would have my classroom write about silly or embarrassing moments that have happened to them personally. They could share them to the class or opt out of reading them out loud.

Genre: realistic fiction. Though Junie B Jones is a fictional character, her thoughts, actions and ideas appear to be believable of a young child. The style of writing is engaging and dialogue is believable.

These books are good to introduce students into chapter books. The author adds a lot of humor to Junie's character. This book would be good for learning about problem and solution pus setting or theme.

Great book that feeds off of the the other Junie B. Jones books. Junie B.'s continuous silly humor always seems to get her in a lot of trouble, and this time it's graduation day! Follow along with her in the classroom to see how she almost messes up her graduation uniform.
