I wanted to like this book -- really more of an extended essay -- but wasn't able to. Greeley generalizes too much, and has an acerbic attitude to much of Catholic parish life and leaders. OK, maybe I'm overly sensitive, being part of the target of his attack. But I think a lot of what he says

happens doesn't happen everywhere, for instance, where I work. In short, his analysis of the changes from Vatican II make sense, his prescription doesn't resonate with me. And his overuse of the word "patently" becomes grating.
