I was introduced to this book at library storytime. The librarians really like this book and the sequels, and the kids there get into it a lot.

Scaredy squirrel is afraid of... well... everything. Mostly the unknown. After all - it may contain sharks! Or germs! Or green martians! Or... KILLER

BEES!!!!! So he just stays in his tree. He can eat a nut and look at the view, eat a nut and look at the view all day long. No excitement. No danger. Everything absolutely under control.

Until a killer bee appears, flinging the poor squirrel to the ground. Luckily, he finds out he's a flying squirrel. And luckier still, he knows just what to do. Playing dead, after all, is ALWAYS a good option. So he hangs out there for two hours and goes home, and makes DRASTIC changes to his life. Now, we learn, he goes out into THE UNKNOWN every day for two hours to play dead.

(He's still kinda scared of everything.)

The book is full of diagrams and detailed plans, so read it once or twice to yourself before you try reading it aloud. Be sure to ham it up, too - this is the sort of book that's MADE for frantic mugging and dramatic pauses.

Cute book about going into the 'unknown', which could be a scary place at first. Scaredy Squirrel certainly was frightened of the unknown until one day his world turns upside down!

Helen's pick. I love this book about a squirrel whose paranoia keeps him tree-bound, until one day when his safety kit falls to the ground, and he must venture into the world to retrieve it. This one has lots of bits of text and little pictures, so is not suitable as a read-aloud to a large group,
Show More
and the humor might work better with kids who are age five and up. (Parents will love it, too!)

This book is about a suirrel who is scared to leave his home but something happens to where he has to leave and go out into the unknown and realizes nothing bad is going to happen.

My personal experience is that I am scared of heights and certain insects.

A classroom extension that I would use for
Show More
the classroom is have students play charades to tell what they are afraid of and have students try to guess.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable, funny children's book.

Scaredy Squirrel is just that -- a timid, shy squirrel who wants to stay safe inside the little hole in the tree where he is comfortable and will not have to encounter any challenges or take risks. He finds, however, that there are some exciting things out in the big wide world and with a little
Show More
preparation, he can venture out and still have a good life. Great book for shy youngsters!

Scaredy squirrel is scared of a lot of things. He makes an emergency plan for 'just in case'! He has no plans to be out of his tree though. But he does have to use his back up plan and finds out it's not so bad.

We read this story the first day of class and I loved it. Scaredy Squirrel realized that the world around his can be scary but also very fun. I can’t wait to read this to kids.

A scaredy squirrel has a safety plan for his home in the tree, and while it keeps him away from sharks and germs it can get a little dull. Will he find any adventure or is he too scared.

Children's picture book.

I fell in love with this when we read it as a class and was so excited when it was at
Show More
our book fair at school. My daughter picked this for my journal, and we've read it about a million times.

I like the idea of using this book as a journal prompt for my first graders. Making lists and schedules can be hard work, so using Scaredy Squirrel as a creative model would be really fun.

I love love love this book!! This book makes it fun for children to want to read. This is a great book to read aloud to children in the classroom or in a small group. Melanie Watt does a great job of making books fun and easy for children to read.

I loved this book! Melanie Watt is such a talented author. I could picture myself reading the story of Scaredy Squirrel at the beginning of the school year. Students starting out a new school year could relate to Scaredy Squirrel's fear of the "unknown".

Hilarious book, even for an adult. The illustrations are wonderful and keep the child engaged in the book. It is a story about facing your fears. Scaredy Squirrel was afraid to leave the tree but soon found out that nothing bad would happen to him. A great lesson for children to learn.

A great book
Show More
to read to class as it does teach a face your fears lesson. Perhaps, you could have a discussion with your students on their fears and come up with ways to help them face their fears.

A story about a squirrel who is afraid to leave his tree for the dangers of the unknown. The details and humor are very enjoyable as well as the ending. I enjoyed this book fully and so have my preschool class. It is an easy book to read over and over.

I enjoyed having this story read aloud to me. I would love to borrow a copy of the book and read it aloud to my students. It would be a great book to use at the beginning of the school year to talk about the challenges and adventures that the year may hold for us.

This is another story from Melanie Watt that is humerous to read. This story is about a squirrel who is to afraid to leave the safety of his tree until one day he falls out of the tree and has to put his safety plan into full affect. This is a great story for all ages and is fun to read!

THIS WAS SHARED IN CLASS AND I LOVED IT. MY FAVORITE PART WAS THE SCHEDULE THE SQUIRREL KEPT OF HOW HE SPENT HIS DAY. SCAREDY SQUIRREL IS AFRAID OF MANY THINGS, AND BECAUSE OF THIS HE STAYS IN HIS TREE. ONCE HE LEARNS HE IS A FLYING SQUIRREL HE ADDS FLYING TO HIS DAY BUT OTHERWISE KEEPS THE SAME

SCHEDULE. ITS VERRY FUNNY.

This is a really enjoyable and funny book. It's about a squirrel that never leaves his tree, because he is scared of the unknown. One day he finds himself out of his tree and that he is a flying squirrel. Suddenly, he wonders if this isn't so bad? Just in case though, he has his emergency kit,
Show More
including sardines to fend off the sharks below. The book offers charts and diagrams of emergency plans and such. The pictures are great and it promises some good laughs. The books biggest strength are the pictures that offer all of his plans and action throughout.

A neurotic squirrel follows a strict daily routine and is terrified of leaving his tree. He is prepared for disaster - until it actually occurs. If only management would use this as a design guide for powerpoint presentations. This might e funnier for adults than for small children, but I enjoyed
Show More
reading it aloud, and there's plenty of scope for talk.

Scaredy Squirrel is a quirky little character who's afraid of leaving his tree for a variety of reasons, unfortunately even our best laid plans for staying safe and sound can go wrong, and for Scaredy Squirrel, it is no different. Hilariously written and illustrated by Melanie Watt, Scaredy

Scaredy Squirrel knows that the world is a scary, unpredictable place, and that is why he sticks to his nut tree. He is prepared for emergencies of course, and has a plan for everything. When an emergency arises, he finds that plans don't always work out as planned.

(easy, picture) Squirrel is set in his ways. He is afraid of the unknown and loves his familiar comfortable life, except that it is, well, just a little too comfortable. One day something happens that forces him to jump out into the unknown and he discovers it is not as bad as he thought it would
Show More
be! This book has the sweetest illustrations and was genuinely funny. I think it would appeal to any youngster who has ever been afraid to reach out on his own or try something out of the box. Squirrel shows them that sometimes putting aside your fear of the unknown and trying something new can be the best thing you can ever do. An interactive oppurtunity with this book is to have the children name the items in each square from Squirrel's emergency kit, what he does in his daily routine or the things he is scared of. You could also have them call out the days of the week on the page where it shows squirrel sitting in the same tree every day, just on a different branch. The message here is to tell little ones to not be afraid of the unknown and sometimes when you reach out you may just discover a brand new you (Squirrel discovers he is actually a flying squirrel when he jumps out of the tree)!
