Ben's old dog Max finally succumbs to old age. Ben reacts with anger to the offer to get him a new puppy, and when it arrives Ben ignores it. Ben works through his anger and grief with the help of his friend Zach. The boys do this by reminiscing about Max and, through doing so, realising that Max

was old and failing. At the end of the book Ben is ready to name the new puppy. The illustrations are simple and cartoon-like. The language is easy and would be accessible to ages four and over.

Ben has a hard time moving on after his beloved dog, Max, passes away. Dad brings home a new puppy and Ben will have none of it. His best friend, Zach, helps him grieve and he comes around. My first dead dog book. There have got to be better ones out there.

Goodbye, Max is a great story about a very sad thing. It is the story of a young boy whose dog passes away when he is away at school. He does not take the news well, as most would not when they lose a pet at a young age. His parents try and buy a ne dog , but it doesn't help his mood at all.

Eventually his friend is able to help him and he gives in to loving the new dog. It is a wonderful way to help teach a young person about the loss of a pet and how to cope with the emotions.

This is a wonderful story about grieving after a loss. It's a shame it's out of print.
