Book tastes

I love speculative fiction: mystery, fantasy, science fiction, and cosmic/psychological horror. I also love "weird" little books that play with their form, like Nick Bantock's Griffin and Sabine series, where the books are also artifacts, using letters, envelopes, paper and other items to tell a story; or stories that pretend to be encyclopedias (like the Frouds' Faerie and Gnome books), or scrapbooks (like the Lady Cottington series); or strange little illustrated tales, like Edward Gorey's entire list of works. I would love to see what odd tales you've come upon that play with form or content similar to the above. I am also a sucker for holiday-themed mystery stories, so that's a safe bet as well, and I am about to participate in a romance writing program that starts in January, so I'd love to see your favourite paranormal romance (LGBTQ+ or otherwise) or urban fantasy stories. I'm also interested in cosmic horror not written by Lovecraft, so I'd love to see what you could scare up there. I also really enjoy non-superhero graphic novels/manga, so that'd be a good choice too.

Don't get this!

Books without female main characters, political or religious works, coming of age/YA, non-fiction, books about terminal/chronic illness, and/or books where animals are abused/die.

Other notes

Anything marked SLL or CPL are books that belong to other members of my household. SLL's tastes are similar to my own, but CPL's are not. It has been one hell of a difficult year, so thank you so much for picking books for me; your thought and effort means a lot. I hope you have a wonderful holiday!

The Tattooed Map, or Hippolyte's Island, or The Sensualist, or The Lives of Shadows, all by Barbara Hodgson;

The Republic of Dreams by G. Garfield Crimmins;

The Secrets of Pistoulet or one of its sequels by Jana Kolpen.

Or on a slightly different note, a novel that plays with time and format is Possession by A. S. Byatt. (Nov 27, 2023, 5:58pm)
