From the roving nomads on the Eurasian plain in the Third Millennium BC to the great Czars--Ivan, Michael, Peter--who shaped a nation out of sprawling Russia, this book chronicles all the varied races and peoples whose customs, arts, religions, and ways of living contributed to the development of the Russian character.

As Harrison Salisbury states in his Introduction in summing up the value of the book for young readers: "If we know who the Russians are, whence they came, and the history of their trials and tribulations, we can more easily understand what they are today and, at least in part, why they constitute a problem in the world."

Kirkus review:
An easy overview of Russian history, this book is unusual because of its coverage of ancient Russian history. Starting with the pre-historic nomadic tribes of the Russian plain, the author traces the development of Russian arts, religion and culture down to the time of Peter the Great. An expert in both Russian art and archaeology, the author has done a real service to juvenile non-fiction by filling out the picture of the very active archaeological program presently carried on by the Soviet Union. These investigations have revealed a storehouse of information on the early races and tribes whose customs and character went into the make-up of the Russian people. Her method is a steady progress from pre-historic evidence to the earliest recorded forms of government brought down to the despectically privileged czars of the 18th century. Readable and essential background on a present enigma. Seen without the illustrations which will include photographs, maps, and line drawings.
