Local notes

Over 4 million copies in 7 language sold. This is folk medical herbalism centered on European weeds of field and forest, 35 of which are illustrated in color paintings in the book. This herbalism is reminiscent of the work of Fathers Kneipp and Kunzele, rooted in the work of the humble woman healer Maria Treben, who uses herbs as an extension of her faith in God's healing powers, emphasizing prevention of illness, and gentle continuous treatments. It is not scientific Formulary E medicine, which also comes from Germany. In addition to relyiing on an armamentarium of simples, Maria depends heavily on a mixture developed by a Swedish doctor Samst , called "Swedish Bitters"-- which she uses for myriad complaints. She also steeps her teas for remarkably short times-- 30 seconds, as opposed to the 3 to 5 minutes or more of many herbalists.
