This book holds up amazingly well. It remains a staple in our kitchen. It is well organized, well indexed and besides the dependable and delicious recipes it contains a wealth of secondary information about caloric and nutritional value, cleaning, and shopping hints. Its looseleaf binding makes it

A must have for cooks. It's the equivalent to Cooking 101, all the basics and a good foundations. A great reference still.

My go-to book for desserts and cookies and it has never failed me. Great pie fillings, delicious cookies and interesting things like bread pudding and sauces. Of course now I'm wondering to myself why I've never made it out of the dessert section?

This is my go-to cookbook for virtually all of my general cooking and baking. If the recipes lack inspiration or variety, that's something that an inventive cook can compensate for. I own two editions, and comparing the changes in recipes (older recipes use more shortening, newer recipes more

butter or margarine) has taught me a lot about substitution and cooking chemistry. As much as I love the wealth of recipes available on the internet, it is to this book I turn first when I want a trusted recipe that I know will work.

Recommendation: Give this to someone moving into their first house or apartment. Maybe it will only decorate the kitchen, but it might start a lifelong love of cooking.

Heh. This was my mother's go to cookbook. 5-ring binder, clear vinyl flyleaf, photographs galore; this is the first edition, 2nd printing, (1953). I will never forget the Pecan-dotted Butter-scotch rolls, the unbelieveable lard-based pie crusts for mincemeat pies, soaked in brandy: (which could

kill if you ate more than 2 slices - but I guarantee you would die happy!!) And the peach cobbler - there is nothing that even comes close. Guaranteed to turn your arteries to stone, but what a flavor!!

This is a tried and true favorite. I've been using this cookbook in various forms since 1977 and it remains authentic, real, reliable, and always good. Recently I revisited the chocolate cream pie and was reminded again of just how much better homemade tastes than pudding from a box. Thank you

An excellent basic cookbook. A must for anyone who even attempts to cook.

This is a good basic cookbook. I find the calorie counts with every recipe and the number of pasta based dishes annoying but otherwise it is useful and informative.

I got this as a gift for attending an event and love having it in my vegetarian kitchen. The dessert recipes are worth the bookshelf space, alone.

The nutrition info is summarized for each chapter in a single table.

I have a few of these lying around. I don't think I've ever used one. The reason I keep buying more of these ringbound cookbooks at estate/garage sales is because I keep finding Grandma's/Auntie's secret trove of handwritten favorites in them. It's probably unethical of me to keep them, but I

An updated version of a classic. A simple cook book with simple recipies - a neat primer.
LibraryThing member tngrant
One of my "go back to" cookbooks. Anytime I need a recipe, I always start here.

A great basic cookbook. This is the one I turn to when I need a basic recipe for baked goods, family favorites, and general American foods like pizza, pasta, muffins, cakes, cookies, ground beef presentations, fish dishes and so on. Nothing innovative, but a lot of family foods. Nutrition info is

provided. The ring binding is appreciated in the kitchen.

Some good recipes. Best part about it is the conversions on the back cover. Nice shortcuts for fresh herbs.

This is the best general reference cookbook there is. Every kitchen needs one, it has all the basics - how to hard boil eggs, make fudge, mash potatoes, etc. with easy to follow instructions. Love it!
LibraryThing member rampaginglibrarian
One of the classics that is good for every kitchen to have as a jumping off point.
LibraryThing member ahgonzales
Great for basics. It literally tells you how to scramble eggs, etc. I'm not much of a cook, especially when it comes to throwing something together, but there are enough recipes marked "fast" that I can usually find a recipe with the ingredients I have in the house. It's also fun for when I have a

Another "must have" for your cook book library. Use this book as a beginner, or to find basic recipes to build on. Generally simple to understand, easy to prepare recipes.
LibraryThing member steadfastreader
's okay. I find the recipes to be a bit dull and overly traditional for my taste. My sister loves it though. I also like the three ring binder style. :)
LibraryThing member CharityBradford
Good standard recipes.
LibraryThing member krista.rutherford
Good reference, easy to follow. Nothing too exotic, but covers a lot.
LibraryThing member hopeevey
I love this cookbook :) My mom had the 3-ring-binder version.
