I have read several Comptons and I was looking forward to this one as I agree with the book jacket blurb that he wrote in the same vein as Louis L'Amour. However, this novel is not near the standard set by Compton. Some of the incidents and characters do not ring realistic. I had difficulty getting

Paul Meakes runs a general store in a small Colorado town in 1886. While visiting another traveling merchant to purchase supplies, they are attacked by Comanches. His daughter is wounded and after being treated by the doctor fails to recover. As the ailment doesn't seem to be because of the wound, Meakes sets out to find the cause. It turns out to be contaminated water. With the assistance of a native and a bounty hunter, he searches for the source of the problem and the remedy.
