From jacket: A magnificent gyrfalcon, soaring in the air over rocky cliffs, is winged by a hunter and falls to earth wounded. Rescued and taken to a nearby farmhouse, the bird's plight will irrevocably change the lives of her savior, Michael Somers, and the woman and child Somers comes to

love.

Somers has returned to his hometown of Little River Bend to unlock the secrets of his own past - secrets that drove him years ago to almost destroy his family in one night of senseless violence. Released from treatment, but shunned by his neighbors, Sommers is determined to heal the bird and release her to freedom. Watching from afar is a troubled little boy who lost his ability to speak after witnessing his father's death in a hunting accident. Slowly, an emotional bond grows between this lonely child, his mother, and the strange man who seems to have the ability to heal.

Set in the majestic snow-covered spruce forests of the Pacific Northwest, this stunning literary debut explores the enduring strength of human compassion and the redemptive power of nature.

This book is well written. The prose allows you to experience the emotions of the chrcaters, including the falcon.

The book starts when Michael Somers returns to his hometown in northern British Columbia after many years absence he is shunned by the community. Alone and the subject of malicious

gossip he attempts to come to terms with the traumatic events of his past.

As well as being a story of redemption, this is a dramatic tale of love, jealousy and insecurity in the pressure cooker of a tight knit community where emotions build to an explosive climax.

The falcon's part of this story soars above the human plots, which involve some stereotypic characterizations. These are surpassed by Harrison's exquisite prose in the falcon passages, which make the story overall quite reqarding. I read this several years ago and vividly recall the pleasure.

The writing is excellent, but the plot was pretty formulaic and predictable.

A touching story of renewal, healing of raw feelings for a number of people. Woven through the interesting exploration of tending and training a gyrfalcon that has been shot to enable its recovery and eventual release back into the wild. Only jarring piece was the shot that killed the man trying to

cause the trainer to fall from the cliffs. But a tidy clearing up of the drama.
