Description

Fiction. Literature. Romance. Darcy Stone is game for anything-except sexy Navy vet and physical therapist AJ Colten, the guy who'd rejected her when she'd needed him most. Now the shoe is on the other foot and he needs her to play nice and help him secure grants for his patients. She needs the money to fund her passion project: rescuing S&R dogs and placing them with emotionally wounded soldiers. AJ admits it-Darcy is irresistible. But he's already been battle-scarred by a strong-willed, vivacious, adventurous woman like Darcy, and he's not making the same mistake twice-until he and Darcy are forced to fake a relationship. Growing closer than they'd ever imagined possible, Darcy and AJ have to ask themselves: how much between them is pretend? What's the real thing? And where does it go from here?… (more)

Jill Shalvis is one of my go-to authors when I want to spend some time with wonderful characters that tend to be drawn inexorably together and have chemistry aplenty. The dialogue is never stilted and the male and female characters are always people that you would want to have as friends.

This is

the story of Darcy and AJ. Darcy has had a terrible automobile accident and AJ, as her physical therapist, has been instrumental in getting her back up on her feet. Both Darcy and AJ are generous people that do their best to provide for others – AJ through pro bono work with PT patients in need and Darcy through providing service dogs that need a second chance. Both AJ and Darcy have experiences that impact their ability to trust and freely give of themselves to another.

4.5 Stars Jill Shalvis is a must read author or mine so when Still The One showed up early in my mailbox I knew what I was reading this weekend. While I can’t say it’s my favorite of the series because I did feel like there were a few things left unsettled on AJ’s side overall Still The One

was really, really good. The humor and emotion that Jill is known for was felt throughout the entire book and it left me with a big happy feeling and a massive smile on my face which is what I want out of romance books!

First Thought when Finished: Still the One by Jill Shalvis was fun, sexy, emotional, and sweet. Just what I have come to expect from this series!

Overall

Thoughts: Darcy and A.J. took a little bit to warm up to but overall their love story was just what I expect from this series: a bit sassy, fun, emotional, and smoldering. I really love the world of Animal Magnetism and enjoyed getting lost in it again. If you love animals, love, romance, and characters that are a little bit damaged then you will love this series AND Darcy/A.J.!

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated By Karen White / Length: 9 hrs and 41 mins

Karen nails this series! I have listened to all of these on audio and wouldn't do it any other way. Karen has a way of bringing Jill Shalvis' voice alive and her characters that extra Umph!

Absolutely fantastic! Everything you expect from a Jill Shalvis romance. Humor, incredible characters, snarky banter and unbelievable chemistry between the H/h fill this pages of this wonderful book. We've met Darcy in previous books in this series and now we really get to know her and understand

the reasons behind some of that bravado. Falling for the oh so hot physical therapist AJ Colten was never going to happen. Nope. No way.

This installment of the Animal Magnetism series is fantastic and a recommended read for everyone.

Still the One by Jill Shalvis is a 2015 Berkley publication.

I've been reading a lot of Jill Shalvis' books recently trying to catch up on some of her series and so far this Animal Magnetism arc with Wyatt, Zoe, and Darcy has been one of my favorites.

Darcy was already emotionally damaged before a
Show More
near fatal car accident sent her into a nightmare of physical therapy and a long, long road to recovery. Falling for A.J., her PT, was not a good idea, especially since he's made it clear, he's not interested in her that way.

Now, she is working for him, which makes being in close proximity to him sweet misery. However, Darcy is given a golden opportunity to help A.J., and gives it her best effort, but may have taken it too far by suggesting she and A.J. are a couple to impress an important client. Now she and AJ must pretend to be in a relationship, and before long A.J finds his resistance to Darcy is breaking down and the walls he's built around his heart are crumbling. But, Darcy is a wild card and it's going to take a lot of work to convince her to give their relationship a shot.

I knew Darcy's story was going to be a challenge. On the surface, she is not a very likable person, but upon closer inspection, she is obviously living in defense mode, all day, every day. She is a character that can wear a person out, and she gave A.J quite a workout.

I think the thing about this story that makes it work was A.J. His patience is something that makes him good at his job, and so he can tolerate Darcy's outburst, sarcasm, and little fits of drama, even though she drives him nuts. He is so sweet, gentle, and thoughtful, which is exactly what Darcy needs. He smooths out her rough edges, draws out her softer side, and in the process, learns he has been fighting the inevitable for far too long.

I am thrilled that Darcy finally got her HEA!! Of all the Stone siblings, she was the one I cheered on the most, I suppose, because I felt her story was the most heartbreaking, but also the most heartwarming.

Really good book. We met Darcy in her brother Wyatt's story, Then Came You. She is recovering from a very bad car accident that put her in a wheelchair. Thanks to the hard work and determination of AJ, she can walk again. The two of them have quite a history, and the sparks between them fly hot and
Show More
fast.

First impression of Darcy was that she could be quite a brat. She doesn't like to accept advice and can be rather snarky and not very nice when she talks to AJ. She puts forth a very independent attitude, but she's also got a vulnerable center, and a lot of that attitude is a way to protect herself. Her parents were mostly absent in her life, finding their careers more important. She has never felt wanted or needed, or even loved, and has trouble accepting it when it is offered. She has been attracted to AJ for a long time, but the one time she made advances to him he turned her down. Since then things have been tense between them, even though they work together.

AJ is a physical therapist who has a true calling. He frequently continues therapy work on patients even when their insurance runs out, because he wants the best for them. He has the opportunity to get a grant to continue his work, but needs to take a former patient along as witness to his work. When his first choice bows out, AJ is left with asking Darcy. He's hesitant because of the tension between them. He's been attracted to her for years, but she's his best friend's little sister, and then she was a patient, which makes her off limits. Plus, he's been burned once by a woman who couldn't get past her issues and he didn't want to risk the same kind of hurt. I liked that he knows how strong and amazing Darcy is, knows when to sympathize and when to push, and doesn't coddle her.

The trip to Boise only serves to increase the sparks between them. Darcy goes a little overboard with her "help" and implies that there is a romantic relationship between her and AJ. Add in a snowstorm that strands them at the hotel and their inclusion in a team building exercise, and the sparks that fly between them burst into flame. I loved seeing AJ's protectiveness and care for her as she battles the memories of her crash brought on by the storm. Their coming together was spicy and sweet, and left both of them rattled by how it affected them.

I liked that AJ was ready to embrace how he felt. The problem he had was that Darcy was afraid to believe that he could really care for her. I loved seeing him patiently wear down her walls. Then a partially overheard conversation sends her running, believing she's been rejected again. I ached for her and how devastated she was. Poor AJ was completely unaware of what had happened, and confused by her actions. It was great to see his determination to fix whatever had happened, and I loved his big moment at the end. I can't wait to see more of them in later books and see how they are doing.

There was also a secondary storyline involving Darcy's rescue of S&R dogs that are no longer useful or have other problems. Her determination to save and many as possible and turn them into therapy dogs show just how big a heart she really has. I loved seeing her match dogs with just the right person, as her insight always seems to be spot on.

I also liked the other characters. Darcy and her siblings are still repairing their relationships with each other after suffering from the effects of their parents' neglect. Wyatt and Zoe tend to be a bit overprotective, which grates on Darcy and her sense of independence, but they are there for her when she needs them. Darcy also has a good friend in Xander, local tattoo artist and bad boy. Unfortunately, she doesn't see that he really wants more than to be just friends, though the interactions between him and AJ should have been a clue.

I loved the humor that wound throughout the book. There were a couple of hilarious scenes involving animals, including an office scene with Darcy and a parrot, and another involving puppy obedience training. The conversation between Darcy and AJ on the trip to Boise was a riot, covering everything from her eating habits to her sniping at him.

Reading a book by Jill Shalvis is such a comforting thing and this one was just as awesome as the others. Hot sweet guy? Check. Troubled and funny as hell girl? Check. Result: a delicious romance novel.

Reading a Jill Shalvis book is like eating chocolate chip cookies. Once i start, i can't put it down, as much as i want to savor the experience. Another book with deliciously alpha men and a heroine so damaged and yet so tenacious that she's willing to take the chance that this time it might be

different.

Still the One is everything i've come to expect in a Jill Shalvis novel, humor, angst, poignant moments and steamy collisions between two highly charged people.

Still the One
4 Stars

Darcy Stone and AJ Colton both have valid reasons for not getting romantically involved. Still smarting from AJ’s previous rejection, Darcy begrudgingly agrees to help him secure grant funding for his physical therapy patients. AJ is just a reticent as he and Darcy will have
Show More
to pretend to be a couple; an idea that he is much too eager to explore for real. Can AJ and Darcy get beyond the past and find a future together?

Darcy and AJ’s romance is sweet and the “fake” relationship trope only intensifies their pre-existing chemistry. Given their backstories, i.e., Darcy’s issues with rejection and AJ’s reluctance to become involved with a footloose and fancy free woman, it is not surprising that communication, or the lack thereof, becomes a central focus. That said, the story mostly manages to avoid the silly misunderstandings that usually characterize this type of relationship.

The secondary plot involving Darcy’s rehabilitation of search & rescue dogs is charming, but unfortunately does not play as integral a part as it could have and remains rather underdeveloped. Secondary characters Zander and Tyson are both intriguing and it will be interesting to see if Shalvis develops them further.

In sum, Still the one is another solid installment in this charming series about small town friends who find love in the most unlikely of places.

I completely love this heroine. Darcy is so wounded but still so strong. Her inner reactions to events throughout the book had me in tears. And the retired service dogs she rescues - omg. I snuggled my own little pound puppy a LOT while reading this. As always with Shalvis, the side characters are

multi-dimensional as well - I can't wait to read Xander and Tyson's books!
