Knowing that I would be spending a week in Camden this summer, I picked this book up at a library sale for vacation reading. What fun to read it while camped at the foot of Mount Battie with the still-small town of Camden just a couple of miles away! The book is a quick and easy read, reasonably

well-written and plotted and perfect for vacation. The characters are well-developed and you come to care about them quickly. Recommended.

I usually don't read "chick lit," but this had a substantial plot to it, and I was able to overlook any sappiness.

I had some trouble getting into this one, and usually Lavyrl captures me from page 1. Once I got a bit into it though, it was a great book, as she typically writes.

An easy to read book that sometimes dragged a bit. I liked the characters and the way they developed. I still find it hard to believe how ostrasized a divorced woman was back in the early 1900's. Now adays divorce is everywhere and we don't think it's the womans foult (it was the man! haha jk)
I

loved the spunk of the main character, how she managed a raggedy house, 3 kids and even her own motorcar!
I was surprised how quickly she fell into marriage again, but then she was miserable her entire marriage and hearing how wonderfull Gabe was as a husband lured her in. (Never believe them at 1st! They tell you what you want to hear!) hahaha
It was a nice, safe story with a bit of rough and tumble sex but only once. (dont want to be a spoiler)
I am not sure I would seek out this author again as her story was too slow and not as exciting as I like.

Like most other Spencer romances, this was charming and descriptive with a love story that leaves you sighing.

Another winner from Spencer! I saw this book at a local library used book sale and snatched it up, given the great experience I had with Morning Glory. I was not disappointed!

First off, I adore Roberta! I find her fantastically independent, caring, and vulnerable when she needs to, as well as
Show More
un-domestic, just like me. There were times where the claims to independence were a bit much with multiple stressing of the point, but I can forgive that with how much I love her character. I also loved Gabriel. He seemed like a truly caring man, who is mourning for his lost beloved wife, loving towards his daughter if a bit exasperated by her teenager-ness, and just trying to build a strong and steady life for his family. He’s the kind of man that truly seems to balance out Roberta’s wild ways.

And boy do I love the love connection between Roberta and Gabriel! They are perfect bookends for each other; high energy meets placid calm, fiery temper meets even keel. I adored the slow burn we got to the relationship, with the emphasis on emotions rather than the sexy times. But then from Spencer’s previous book, I’ve grown to expect that. Another point of awesome is the older age for the leads. I liked that they were more mature than your usual couple, which added a nice bit of difference to the book.

I also liked that the author wasn’t afraid to explore some very serious issues among the sweet romance. While not as emotionally fraught as the previous book I read, the issues in this book still make for some very heavy reading. The author doesn’t get explicit enough to be gratuitous, but the events have true weight with abundant consequences throughout the latter half of the book.

I was so thrilled to get this book and so engrossed by it, that I read the whole thing in 21 hours. Started as soon as I exited the book sale and read the whole way through. Sweet romance, fantastic characters, and some heavy material to balance out the fluff make this a winner historical romance. I look forward to more from this author and recommend the book highly.

Local notes

In 1916 Roberta Jewett, 39 & divorced mother of 3 girls, moved back to home town Camden, Maine. A "Public Nurse" (a nurse who travels to patients homes to treat them), she's considered unusual among women living in these times, due to her education, training, and marriage status. She's learned from living for years with a no-good, womanizer, how to fend for herself and the girls. Immediately upon disembarking the train, she meets Gabriel Farley, a widower with a daughter of his own, and a carpenter by trade. He is contracted to fix up her dilapitated house, purchased on her behalf by her conniving, no-good, womanizing brother-in-law. Gabe and Roberta are at once attracted and repelled by each other. Their future dealings run hot or cold. They are polar-opposites. At the same time, Roberta successfully sidesteps her brother-in-law's waundering hands until the day her new Model-T Ford runs out of gas in the countryside and he "happens by" and stops to help her refill. Her brother-in-law no longer takes "no" for an answer and rapes Roberta on the roadside. Roberta knows she can't confide this to her sister Grace or her always condemning mother, so drives to Gabe's for help. She doesn't wish for her girls to find out about their Uncle this way. Gabe is tender and caring and Roberta realizes she loves him. Gabe realizes that Roberta means something more to him than just a first fancy after 7 years of widowhood. Gabe seeks out ______ and beats him to a pulp and almost burns the man with his own cigar, like the man did to Roberta, permanently marking her. The town is outraged at Roberta and Gabe, mistakenly blaming Roberta for playing the men against one another. Roberta wants to move forward but the school board gets wind of this and proposes to take her girls away from her. They say Roberta is an unfit mother because of her poor housekeeping and hours away from home, working. They really think that she is a brazen hussy because she is a divorcee. Gabe offers to marry Roberta but while she loves him, she won't marry him because she wants her next (& last) marriage to be one filled with love and respect. Gabe is a nondemonstrable person, so she has no idea that he does love her. Finally, driven by anger and frustration, Gabe flat out tells Roberta that he loves her and she is going to marry him. They set a wedding date months in advance because Roberta is wary of the marriage bed. Meanwhile, the school board's initiative is voted down after a prominent societal woman sets forth to support Roberta's rape claim, as she herself was raped when 17, by _______. Now the townspeople no longer look past _______'s public philandering and see him for the scum he is. Roberta's mother confesses that her lifetime ill manner towards her daughter is due to the fact that Roberta is the result of an affair the mother had with a traveling train builder. At the wedding, Roberta's mother attends as do many town citizens, but Grace does not show, and continues her cool attitude toward Roberta for the rest of their lives. After some initial resistence, Roberta realizes that Gabe isn't like ______ and her ex-husband ________, she trusts him, so feels comfortable making love with him from then on.
