Description

Corporal Reid Macfarland has one mission: to make amends for the mistake he lives with every day. That friendly-fire incident in Afghanistan that killed a fellow soldier haunts him. Maybe if he can help the widow, he'll find some peace. Amends are easier said than done. Just one meeting with the independent and engaging Parker Dean makes it clear that forgiveness is a little more complicated than money or "I'm sorry." If he really wants to help, Reid will need to stick around for a while. The more their daily lives intertwine, the more he realizes her forgiveness isn't the only thing he needs--he needs her.

I really enjoyed this book! Kathy Altman did an amazing job writing about young widowhood--especially military widowhood--and Parker's journey "back" was a believable and well-written one. I appreciated that both Parker and Reid had to work on healing and forgiveness, and that there weren't any

quick and easy fixes involved. Even though the main conflict of the book is heavy with emotion and quite serious, the author's writing manages to pull it all off in a way that handles the subject well but still manages to make readers smile. The secondary characters were engaging; Natalie, Parker's daughter, and Chase, their black Lab, were particularly well done. Some of the secondary characters--Joe in particular--are practically begging for their own story (hint, hint!:) I really enjoyed the author's voice throughout--it felt fresh and different. However, it did at times tend to be a bit heavy on the similes--they were fun and quirky, but sometimes were almost too noticeable. There were a very few minor details about Parker's situation that seemed a bit "off"--at least as compared to personal experience--but neither of these things truly detracted from my pleasure in the story. All in all, this was a great read from a debut author. I can't wait to read more from her!

From the moment I read the first 1000 words and found out Corporal Reid Macfarland had been responsible for the death of Parker Dean's husband I thought, "How's she going to manage this?" And manage it, Ms Altman did, with a deft hand and a wonderful, touching love story to boot.

there was more curiosity than fear in her eyes and he couldn't hold back a grin. "Anxiety's part of survival," he said. "Keeps you alert."
This is a fantastic debut and I'm so looking forward to Ms Altman's next release.
