4.5 "The Prince & the Librarian" Stars for the Story and 5 Stars for the narration!

Last year, Royally Screwed was one of my top-favorite listens of the year, so I knew I had to listen to the sequel, Royally Matched. It's always hard to follow-up a smash hit. So call me doubly impressed with score

two for Emma Chase! I loved the witty and fun nature of Royally Matched, while at the same time admiring its message of responsibility and growing-up and tackling one's life goals. Moreover, I'm a huge fan of the wallflower finds her HEA, so the fact that the playboy prince falls for the reticent, book loving heroine was icing on the cake. Moreover, Shane East is simply divine--I could listen to his cocky, assured and sexy voice narrate boilerplate contract language (in other words, just about anything)--so the fact that I got to listen to him narrate a book I enjoyed was simply audiobook nirvana!

Prince Henry is now the heir to the throne of Wessco (a fictional country--at least I think!) after his older brother, Nicholas (the hero from Royally Matched) abdicated the throne to marry his American heroine, Olivia. Having never been groomed to assume such responsibility, his carefree nature is challenged with the mounting duties. So Henry decides to do what he does best, blow off some steam by accepting an invitation to be the bachelor of a reality TV series that is meant to help him find his queen.

As a number of royally qualified potential matches are summoned to the castle for the show (gentry ladies from Wessco, who must be virgins (among other qualifications)!), Henry begins to form a friendship with the sister of one of the contestants (Sarah Mirabelle Zinnia Von Titebottum--yes, that's her name and Shane East had some real fun recreating dialogues where the couple discuss it). Because she's seen as safe, Henry squirrels himself away in her room at nights to evade the cameras. Of course, it's all strictly platonic even if they both begin to feel the heat of their attraction. Nonetheless, Henry has signed a contract obligating him to bring the show to its conclusion (a responsibility he is determined to for once see through to its conclusion), and Sarah is determined to find herself a dependable, non-playboy type of man. Will they both carry though with their obligations/supposed desires or is love sometimes worth risking it all for?

Shane East and Andi Arndt narrate Royally Matched in the typical new adult fashion with Mr. East narrating the chapters from Henry's perspective and Ms. Arndt the ones rom Sarah's. Ms. Arndt does a fine job with her part achieving all of the classic hallmarks I look for in a good narration, including differentiation of characters, communication of emotion, and good pacing.

However, I just could not get enough of Mr. East's narration! Think of him as a British, Sebastian York. What a sexy and confident voice! And his ability to deliver tongue in cheek humor is off the charts. It's like the Royally Series was written for him--he is just that good! I would give him 5+ stars if it were possible, and definitely hope that he narrates many, many more books in the future.

All in all, Royally Matched is a must listen for romantic comedy lovers.

Dreamy, splendid fun. I just love this series. One note, if you choose the audio, the female narrator has the worst fake British accent in history. She forgets it on occasion and speaks with her own American voice, and its great. Then she decides to try posh brit speak again, and it is terrible.

I should have stopped while I was ahead.

This one magnified everything I didn't enjoy from the first. Our hero was such an immature I can't believe we're really calling him the hero, guy. He never did redeem himself for me. Because of the Bachelor like show he is involved with, more than

half of his time is spent with other women. Even though this time isn't really focused on or seen, you're still aware of it. The time he does spend with the heroine (also, this happens over a span of 6weeks) is rushed and we're told they talk all night but don't get to read about the sharing.
My shy book loving heroine is more of a badly done facsimile of one. Her painful background also felt sloppily done; in fact this whole story felt sloppy.
Shallow characters and shallow story line, I know, I should have seen this coming with the synopsis.
Even though we don't get a glimpse of the couple I'm looking forward to in the third book, I'm still going to read it and hope it gives me some of the cheesy charm from the first. The hero gives me more hope as he has to be more mature than this one was.

*Rounded up because the hero searches out a first addition Sense and Sensibility for heroine (because he ruined her copy in an immature fit. Ugh.)

I realize I'm probably inflating this rating because I love the audio book - likely much more than I would the text. Shane East is

Today (review written 8/31/17) the world is remembering a particularly tragic royal story. And while I’ve been reading every Prince Diana in memoriam magazine, I’ve been thinking a lot about the fact that for the vast majority of us, it’s just a story. We didn’t know her – she inspired

us, but we didn’t know her. But to her sons, to her family, even to the Windsors, she was vibrant and full of life. And we, the common folk, the Americans who wish the Windsors were ours as well, still cry over the person we’ve lost.

This might seem like a very strange way to start a review of a new adult romance. But I think it’s the fact that the princes of Wessco, the shirtless men on these two covers, are thoroughly based of of William and Henry, and call it what you will, but Emma Chase uses their own loss in her stories to inform their actions in her stories. And while the first in the series, Royally Screwed, was enjoyable, it didn’t really stick with me for long after reading as Royally Matched has.

The reason, I believe, is the way Chase created and wove together the story of Henry and Sarah. Yes, as a new adult romance, it has it’s fair share of bedroom romps, but there’s actually a well thought out plot, one that is far more complex than the synopsis on the back would lead one to believe, and the characters are richly developed and remarkably well-rounded. Both characters feel they have a greater purpose, a responsibility to help those around them and to lead productive lives. And if you’re going to use the loss of a real figure and the lives of the British princes to influence your storytelling, I’m so glad that Chase decided to give one of her Wessco princes a desire to use his title and influence in a positive way.
