Adler writes romantic suspense / chick-lit. This is the first in her Mac Reilly / Sunny Alvarez series. Mac is a private investigator with a Malibu beach bungalow, a one-eyed mutt named Pirate, and a reality crime-investigation TV show. His girlfriend Sunny just wants him to propose. While out

for an evening stroll on the beach, he hears a woman scream and nearly gets shot when he runs to investigate. Before he knows it, however, he’s got multiple clients in the rich-and-famous Hollywood jet-set. The story has the characters traveling to Italy, Mexico and France in pursuit of a murderer.

The writing is hackneyed, and the characters one-dimensional. Worse, the plot twists are so incredible as to be plain ridiculous. I’ve read some of her other books and thought they were fun beach reads. I think she got carried away with this one and tried to do too much. I didn’t care at all about the relationship between Mac and Sunny. Actress Allie Ray’s adventures in the South of France were the best part …. That might have made an entertaining read all on its own.

I really enjoyed listening to this mystery. The narrator did a good job. I wonder if the one character was meant to be gay, or if it was just the effect of the woman reading the book

One of those summer romance/mystery reads - a mystery that goes off the rails into a romance then back again - pretty predictable but easy to listen to with little attention needed
