Not her best work; The story is drawn out toward the end. While not a standout in Brown's lengthy body of work, "Smoke" is an interesting story, marking her transition from genre romance to romantic suspense.

Eden Pass, Texas might as well be Peyton Place. Tackett Oil pretty much owns the town, and the Tackett family is full of colorful characters, from bad boy son to crusty matriarch to dutiful daughter. There's also the newly arrived female doctor who has a Past with a Tackett, the town hussy, and the

handsome ex-con looking to start over. Add to that revolutionaries in an unstable Central American country and you've got quite a plot.

Where There’s Smoke by LA Witt gives us the definitive alpha male character in Anthony, political campaign manager extraordinaire. Almost every romance author tries to write alpha males, and the ham-fisted result is usually obnoxious and smug as to be completely unattractive. But not Anthony.

Sure, he is hard charging, strong-willed, poised, and self-confident. However, this is balanced by his intensity and vulnerability to Jesse. He is way too driven and emotionally committed to sit around smirking with amused detachment.

Jesse’s innocence and integrity make him a good counterpart to Anthony, and their chemistry is smoking hot. Both men show an appealing sense of humor in their interactions with super-competent assistant Ranya, and the political underpinning to the story is fascinating. The conflict centers on Jesse’s obligation during his campaign to keep up appearances in a fake marriage to a troubled actress. As conflicts go, it felt more manufactured than organic to me, but the author does so masterful a job of building support for it that I couldn’t help accepting it by the book’s conclusion. Even the actress comes across as three-dimensional and understandable, if not exactly likable.

The book opens in Anthony’s first-person viewpoint as he reluctantly agrees to manage the campaign in Jesse’s bid to become governor of California. The next chapter picks up in Jesse’s first-person viewpoint, making it clear that both men are overwhelmingly attracted to each other. But their problems are numerous. First, each man doesn’t know how the other feels. Second, they can’t afford even the shadow of scandal while they are on the campaign trail and under scrutiny at all times.

Well Damn. I could not put this book down.. I finished it in one day, I was so hooked!

If you have read anything else by Elizabeth Lee then you should be warned this is different than what she normally writes. This takes on a little darker subject

matter and it isn't light and fluffy! I LOVED it! I am really digging this side of Elizabeth Lee!

Piper and Ryland had a good thing going six years ago. They were young and in love. Experiencing life together. But Piper wasn't known to be a good girl and after what should have been the best night of their lives turned into the worst night, Piper was forced to leave. I hate that Piper left, but I get her decisions. I don't think I would have done things any differently.

Ryland is still angry at Piper for leaving him. She just up and disappeared. No goodbye,no contact for six long years. When she comes back into town he is furious and determined to not let her affect him again. I also have to agree with how he felt.

I really liked these two together.I felt like in a way they balanced each other. I have to admit even with the blurb(guess I'm a little dense) I didn't expect events to turn out the way they did. I liked the way things played out and even though it may not seem realistic I totally could see it happening in real life and working.. I wish we would have seen more about Hadley, but it seems like my wish is coming true! :)Another favorite book and characters! I didn't want this book to end!!

Really a pretty good book. A few twists and turns, likable characters and a really sweet love story for the "plain Jane" of the story. I really liked this one.
