I miss when EL wrote like this. I prefer her older novels to her present day ones. The Only series is my favorites from her.

Summary
Willow Moran, a West Virginian who lost her parents and most of her possessions during the Civil War, is traveling west with her remaining valuables--five Arabian horses--to find her brother Matt, who is prospecting for gold. Her guide from Denver to the San Juan mountains is former Army scout Caleb Black who, unbeknown to Willow, is hunting "Reno" (Matt) Moran to exact revenge. Caleb's sister named Matt as the seducer and father of her dead illegitimate baby, when on her deathbed.
Willow thinks she has lead Caleb to believe she is "Reno's" wife; Caleb really believes she's Reno's "whore".
The hard journey to "Reno's" secret gold mine is complicated by Jed Slater and his gang who are pursuing them to steal Willow's Arabians and to finish a fight begun in Denver with Caleb.
In the final showdown, Matt/Reno and Wolfe Lonetree assist Willow and Caleb in killing Slater's gang and getting Willow to realize that Caleb loves her and did not bed her in retribution for his sister's death, nor commit to marry her because Reno threatened to kill him if he didn't, after learning of Caleb's and Willow's relationship.
