Take me out of the bathtub and other silly dilly songs is a book of poems that are wriiten to popular childrens songs for example take me out to the ballgame and twinkle, twinkle little star. It is a fun book to get children involved with poetry to the songs they are familiar with.

I liked this book
Show More
although it was hard to remember some of the songs and their rhythm or melodies so that you were singing the poems and songs correctly.

Some of the classroom extensions are to have the children listen to the song in the original song and then have the students sing the new version of the poem. The students could write their own poem or song to their favorite childrens song.

This poetry book is full of new poems set to old familiar songs. Each poem tells you what tune to sing it to. It highlights issues kids deal with, like tripping over shoe laces or siblings. It also has things that interest children, gross things like food fights and stinky diapers.

I couldn’t help
Show More
but sing Take Me Out of the Bathtub to the tune of Take Me Out to the Ballgame. I love how he puts each of the poems to tunes the reader probably already knows. The illustrations are wonderful. The picture of the baby covered in food (from The Yogurt Flies Straight from My Brother) literally made me laugh out loud. And I loved at the end of Stinky, Stinky Diaper change, when they get the baby all clean and then “what’s that smell? Oh…not again!” You just know that is inevitably what happens.

You could use this book in classroom extension just for some fun time or to introduce poetry. It could also encourage children to come up with their own poetry about things they know and putting it to a familiar song.

Take me out to the Bathtub is a lyric poem about a child who is ready to get out of the tub because he feels as though he is clean. He seems to have one serious problem, his fingers are terribly wrinkly. While he tries to escape the bathtub, his legs are too wobbly and it is hard for him to get
Show More
up.

I thought this book was very good. I think that the tune to "Take me out to the Ballgame" was a very fitting song for this lyric poem. I really liked how the song/poem was more than one verse and they continued on with the story.

As most of the poetry books, I could use this in a poetry unit in the classroom. Many times I think most kids think poetry is boring, and with a poem through song I think it could get them a little more interested.

I really enjoyed all of the poems in this book. It seems like a great book to use to get students attention. Take me out of the Bathtub is a great resource

In my classroom, I would use this book as a way to get students’ attention.

These crazy poems set to well-known tunes are just a hoot! The illustrations are also very whacky to match the tone of the poems. Since each poem is set to the tune of songs, it is easy to sing or read them. Young kids really get a big kick out of the fact that they can figure out how the poem's
Show More
rhyme is supposed to sound. My favorite is 'Stinky, Stinky Diaper Change', set to the tune of 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'. I have used this particular poem for baby shower gag gift attaching it to a real diaper full of Whoppers! ha! Okay, so these poems are weird, but most people get a real kick out of them!

This book was a blast to read. The way the author made poems out of songs that we grew up on, you can easily get lost in this book. Instead of this being a book you just read, you always catch yourself singing along.

My impression on this book was that I loved it. I was very involved while singing
Show More
along with the poems. This book would be one of the first i would recommend to other people.

To use this in a classroom would be easy for me. After reading the poems with the children, I would have copies of everything to pass out so they could sing along. I would stand in front of them with my guitar and play while they sing.

Take Me Out of the Bathtub and other silly dilly songs by Alan Katz

Take Me Out of the Bathtub and other silly dilly songs is a collection of poems that have a familiar tune to them to sing along. They are very funny poems such as children cleaning their bedrooms, tying their shoelaces, and stinky
Show More
diapers.

I can relate to this set of poem collections because I love to sing while cleaning with my children and this book does just that. This book makes me want to read this to my children when it comes to cleaning their rooms or taking a bath and make light of our chores instead of it being a drag.

In the classroom, you can use this book to help children learn a poem while they are cleaning or learning how to tie their shoes. For tying their shoes, you can get paper plates and use a whole puncher and put holes in it for the place for shoe laces. The teacher can make up a cute poem to a song and let the children practice tying their shoe laces.

In this book, classic children's songs are reinvented in funny, creative ways. The title song, "Take Me Out of the Bathtub," is a clever play on, "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." Other revamped versions of classic songs are, "I've Been Cleaning up My Bedroom," sung to the tune of "I've Been Working

On the Railroad," "Cranky Poodle," instead of "Yankee Doodle," and "Give Me a Break," for "Home on the Range," among others. Children in K-2nd grade would get a lot out of this book. It's filled with rhyming words, language play, and plenty of colorful illustrations. Using the songs in this book, children can practice singing and work on their pitch control and rhythmic accuracy. It's a fun, engaging way for them to play with and enjoy language.

Summary: The poems in this book are children's songs rewritten as silly poems. They have the title of the tune under the new title of the poem.

Personal Reflection: The poems were really fun and cute. I believe it will fun for kids and they will be able to really get into it because they are said to
Show More
the tune of some of their favorite songs. the poems also have bright, colorful, funny pictures that go with each poem and make them even easier to enjoy.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. As a class, pick another children's song and rewrite it into our own poem.
2. Let the children choose their favorite poem out of the book and draw their own illustration to it.

Summary:
This is a collection of silly poems that kids will love. Each one is set to a classic song so the rhythm should be familiar. The title one "take me out of the bathtub" is set to "take me out to a ballgame". Each one has a crazy illustration to go along with.

Personal Reaction:
I think this
Show More
is a great way to get students to read or sing poetry. The pictures are awesome and hilarious, and sometimes just gross. The kids will get a good laugh or be grossed out on the pictures, and poems that go along with.

Classroom Extensions:
1. Assign the kids an easy song like row row row your boat, and have them come up with their own silly words.
2. Have them draw a silly picture like in the book.

Summary:
This collection of children's poetry is written with the intention that each poem be sung to the tune of a familiar (indicated) song such as "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" and "Home, Home on the Range".

Personal Reflection:
I thought this book was hilarious! All the songs are written to
Show More
appeal to kids (the ideas are ones they can relate to, and the "Yuck" factor is used quite well).

Classroom Extension Ideas:
- Would be a great introduction to poetry to engage children's interest and to dispel any preconceived notions that poetry is boring or all about flowers and love.
- Could be used as a "brain-break" as the songs are ones that most kids know and they would lend themselves well to group participation.

I had my puppet sing the first verse of the take me out of the bathtub song, and then we sang the "1, 2, 3 bars of soap take me out i'm clean" part together a couple times

This is a great book that has many funny songs in it. I categorized it under the genre of poetry because the poems can be sang to a tune to a classic song. One of the poems that is called "Go Go Go to Bed" can be sang to the tune of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat". Another example is "Cranky Poodle"
which could be sung to the tune of "Yankee Doodle". This can give the chance for children to test their singing abilities, rhyming techniques and how to sing to a tune of a song. I think that any age group could enjoy this book because the poems are very funny and silly. The only thing that could be difficult for a child, if they just pick this book off of a shelf, is that they may not know the tunes to some or any of the songs. This could make them not interested. But the poems are very easy so hopefully a child would make up their own tune to the song they did not know and still enjoy the book.

I remember being read this book when I was younger and really enjoying it. Take Me Out of the Bathtub is a book that takes old nursery rhymes and changes the words. Each song is turned into a funny story about typical childish behaviors. There is a song about bath time, carsickness, going to bed,
Show More
cleaning your room, and even diaper changes. I think this book is just a fun story to read to children to make them smile and laugh. Children know most nursery rhymes, so they would be able to sing along to the songs. This is just a fun book and would be enjoyed by all children.

Humorous poems written to be sung to familiar tunes: Take Me Out of the Bathtub (Take Me Out to the Ballgame), Give Me a Break (Home on the Range), I Have a Babysitter Here with Me (I Have a Little Baby Bumblebee). Clever stuff.

This review is copied from Amazon.com, comments about other reviewers tackle specific issues mentioned there.

As other reviewers noted, this book is big on "taboo" subjects - dirty diapers, food fights, cleaning up your bedroom by hiding everything out the window, being carsick.... That should come
Show More
as no surprise, after all, the cover (which you can see on this site) shows a naked boy flying out of the bathtub. This sort of material will mildly shock most children and they'll find it hilarious, but if you don't think it's appropriate for your family, read this book before you buy it.

The tunes to the songs in this book should be familiar to most children approaching school age. I can tell you my nieces know all but one of them (Polly Put the Kettle On) at 4 and 6.5, and while we do like to sing I don't think they're *that* exceptional.

I love the cartoony illustrations as well :)

I will note that, as some reviewers stated, not all the songs scan or rhyme as closely as you'd like. This is frustrating, but honestly, making up parody verses is harder than you think. Doubt this? Try it! It's not that easy! I find they're close enough as to make no nevermind most of the time, but YMMV.
