Honestly, this was totally fun and whimsical and I liked the art and the way each verse leads into the next with interlocking rhymes that kids can anticipate and the only reason I didn't rate it better was because the phrase "'cause they got that beat" makes me cringe when I read it out loud and I

could never imagine finding a way to use it myself and me and "'cause they got that beat" are in short inimical.

This book is one big poem that has amazing rythme. It shows how a farm comes together and enjoys danncing and singing. This book teaches children about unity and rythme.

Craig, Lindsey. Farmyard Beat. Illustrated by Marc Brown. 2012. 32 pp. $6.99 brdbk. Alfred A. Knopf/Random House. 0-3079-3082-3 / 978-0-307-93082-8. Ages 0-3.

The inhabitants of this farmyard from the chicks to cows can’t sleep “cause they got that beat,” and they even wake up Farmer Sue with

their racket. Rhythm, rhyme, and repetition are well used throughout the text making this book a good choice for reading aloud in small or large groups and to encourage interactive activities like clapping or chanting of the refrain. Full page spreads are in a paper collage style. The composition of illustrations is energetic and indicative of dancing motion of characters. The book could also be valuable for discussing types of animals and the sounds they make. While the farmyard animals are finally able to fall asleep, the story might not be a good choice for signaling bedtime because of the upbeat tempo which invites spirited chanting and dancing. A good choice for story-time especially in a lively group setting. Recommended. Ages 0-3.

Farmyard Beat by Linsey Craig uses catchy rhymes and rhythms to tell the story of a barnyard of animals who can't sleep. First the chicks wake up and one by one the other animals do too. Until at last, Farmer Sue is up!

Marc Brown (author of the Arthur series) provides the illustrations for this

adorable book. They are collages that use a variety of paper types that provide pattern and visual texture to the pieces.

The book is a good mixture of basics.
naming of animals
the sounds they make
lots of repetition
easy to read lyrics

Woken by the peep-peep-peeing of the chicks, a series of other animals add their own sounds to the nighttime beat of the farmyard, until finally Farmer Sue hears them and comes to investigate.

Author Lindsey Craig and illustrator Marc Brown, who previously collaborated on the picture-book Dancing
Show More
Feet, join forces again in this poetic read-aloud, which features an engagingly rhythmic text and appealing collage artwork. These illustrations are in a different style from the ones Marc Brown created for his famous Arthur picture-books, but have a colorful and quirky sensibility of their own. Although it didn't make a particularly strong impression on me, I can see Farmyard Beat making an excellent read-aloud selection.

An engaging and interactive book that gets children moving! This book is definitely for younger children as they are learning about different animals and sounds. The illustrations, which are hand painted paper collages, are very bold and unique.
